  • I'm totally and unconditionally a HUGE fan of Total Commander for many years now. I started using it at college, so I am actually using it for almost 10 years now!

  • FAR is not "DOS based", it is Win32 console app

  • I Couldn't agree more. Total is THE Orthodox File Manager for Windows. Very flexible and powerful

  • Hi.

I'm using FAR for a very long time. I've tried TC, Servant Salamander,... but the FAR is the best for me.

Your comment about "DOS based tool..." is not fair - as it is 32-bit console application with plugins. It's speed can be hardly overtaken - and if you are keyboard oriented - it's advantage.

And one question - will you ask "Why oh why use a dos based tool these days?" about Emacs or VIM? :)

  • OK, I meant "DOS-like", not DOS Based. The fact that it is purely text driven, is something I find odd.
Regardgin EMacs/VIM, I wouldn't comare that to this. Those tools are far superios in amount of features to the "GUI" based editors out there today in many ways. FAR is comparable, and has even less features than most of the File managers I present here. It's only "advantage" is that it's text based. I'm not sure that's enough to warrent using it instead of the others.

    Roy.

  • I had to admit that I don't understand DOS-like - what is it? Console app? Norton-commander like UI? Text driven apps are not extraordinary (see Linux and its Midnight Commander :) ).

Can, you, please, tell me the features which is missing in FAR? I'm sure that there will not be any important thing...

  • Total Commander totally rocks, man! I've been using it for 9 years, it was Windows Commander back then and I still call it WinCmd... And it is THE first piece of software I install on a new PC!

  • I have been using TotalCommander for ever!

I started back in the late 80's with Norton Commander and fell in love with Windows Commander the first time I saw it.

I too install it first thing off as soon as I setup a new machine and I even have a self-contained version on a USB key for those times when I just need to use it on someone else's machine.

  • Total Commander is the only file manager I use. Only time I use Explorer is when I'm copying files to my HTC TyTN Mobile phone.
How could you live without using the directory shortcuts or the Lister application.
Have you tried the new Total Commander 7 beta? It has some nice new features.

  • I use Total Commander just for the Uninstaller plugin. It completely blows away the standard Windows dialog...

I also like the plethora of plugins. If it just wasn't so UGLY and had a little more polish and macro-ability...

Directory Opus is KING for me. If Directory Opus could run Total Commander plugins it would be all over :)

It does most of what I like about TC but manages to stay beautiful instead of ugly. And it has a very convenient way to add your own buttons to script out your own macro type actions.

  • Far is the best.
Many plugins, and very very quickly works.
You right, it' look like 'old dos' app, but IMHO very usefull app

  • Directory Opus is indeed amazing. It's one of the best pieces of windows software I've ever used, period. I'm still finding cool features every day.

One of the best things about it is that it plays very well with explorer-based version control software like TortoiseSVN/CVS. No other file manager I've found will display the status icons correctly.

  • I'm a keyboard junkie and Xplorer2 is my favorite. Somehow this combination does not fit in your description.
