ALT.NET == Pragmatic.NET - ISerializable - Roy Osherove's Blog

ALT.NET == Pragmatic.NET

During the ALT.NET conference people were clamoring for a different name simply because it creates lots of confusion and some people think it's divisive. I'm not sure about that, but I went ahead and proposed the name Pragmatic.NET or Pragma.NET (PragmaNet?).

In a sense this is the same idea behind the community, where you search for alternatives if you need to get better results, or compose an alternative solution from multiple tools.

I don't think this name will stick because ALT.NET has already caught on. But maybe I'm wrong.

BTW - if you'd like to join the ALT.NET yahoo mailing group: here it is.

I like "Pragmatic.NET" and I like "Agile.NET". But I think "ALT.NET" is here to stay and I'm fine with that. I think Martin Fowler expressed it best when he said that alternative (The ALT in ALT.NET) is something that embraces choice. Sounds good and not divisive to me.

It was great to meet you last weekend!

I posted that suggestion on the yahoo group because I saw it on the paper at the conference.  Good to know you wrote it down there.

I like the idea.

Everyone seems to be clamoring for a mission statement and other items, why don't we just use the contents of the Pragmatic Programmer book?

Good suggestion Roy.

I like Pragmatic.net.  Alt.net sounds counterculture which means it might as well be called Satan.net as far as my higherups are concerned.
