Windows 2003

Perusing over Roy's blog today, I noticed one of the most useful links I've ever found (well, this week):

How to convert your Windows Server 2003... into a workstation!

I know this will quite likely start off a debate, but yes, I've been using Windows 2003 for about a month and a half now.  Yes, as my desktop.

I want the kind of security that it can give me (that XP can't), as well as better resource management. Some of us, for no good reason, really, still haven't upgraded from 128Mb of RAM.  2003 almost never tells me I have too little virtual memory, XP would tell me two to six times a week.

It's been only moderately annoying to get everything set up, once I realized that everything I needed was on the CD, and that it was good that it wasn't installed by default.  (How many servers really need a calculator and sound anyway?)

I also read yesterday that Windows 2003 is as safe as Linux.  Maybe that'll help some of you convince your SysAdmins that it really is time to upgrade.

Yeah, the guide was good, but i still have trouble running 3d games such as unreal 2 on my NVIDIA Gforce 3. On WinXP it ran great, but on 2003, even though I've doen all the tweaks shown, it still runs slow :(
btw, you have me in your links! *Flattered*

I agree that the guide was good.
Theres still one hiccup i have. and that is virus protection. Yes yes, with all the security 2003 brings its close to unnecesary, but if you are using at as a workstation then you are open to attacks that wouldnt normally be applicable to servers, e.g. email-viruses etc.
I'm actually stumped here, the usual vendors Mcafee, Symmantec still do not a product for 2003. Best bets would be CAI or PandaSoftware which at the moment I am not sure whether to trust or not.

Actually, yes, they both do. The same products they offer that support Windows NT/2000 Server Editions, support the Windows 2003 Server Editions. For Symantic, that would be Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition, for McAfee, it's McAfee AntiVirus Enterprise Edition.

Had a bit of a mare today trying to find antivirus software that will actually work. AVG provides a free one (dunno if that one works on win2003 but I'm guessing yes). I'm using AVG 7.0 and it works fine.

Sorry, but seems that after Mcafee Antivrus on WinXP, some dll's are not deleted and prevent from proper working of the system. The only way to remove that software I found is to reinstall WinXP :(
