Compaq Presario Laptop Shuts Down

Published 07 June 05 11:45 PM | russnem

About three years ago I purchased a Compaq Presario 2700 series laptop from (I think) CompUSA. I only did this because I needed a laptop as soon as possible and therefore couldn't wait for a company like Dell to build (and then ship) one.

About a year ago this Compaq model 2715US began to shut itself down.

No warning. No reason. It would just be OFF all of a sudden. And this is a laptop that was used perhaps 2 hours a day for a little over a year.

Is anyone able to offer me any advice about this particular problem? I would love to give this laptop to my mom (in an effort to finally drag her in to the 21st century), but I can't give her something that just shuts itself off simply because it feels like it.

And frankly, may I say to Compaq: I would expect this from "High Quality Computers, Inc.". But from Compaq? You should be ashamed of yourselves.

You might not expect it, but did you know that Compaq also has a repair department, and they even have work to do ;-)

Russ,
I have a Presario and have a similar problem. My problem is that often I am not able to start my laptop. When I press the power button, there's nothing, no sign of any power. It feels as if the machine is just dead. After much playing around, I have discovered that the problem is with the battery. If this happens, I take the battery out, blow into the connectors (if there's any dust or unwanted particles) and then slam it in. Most of the time this remedy fixes the issue.

Give it a try, it may be the answer you are looking for.

# Russ said on June 8, 2005 03:51 AM:

Howdy, thou who hast indicated that I might clean the battery! ;)

I will try this, for sure. I very much appreciate the input.

# Michael Dorfman said on June 8, 2005 08:54 AM:

I've also seen that old batteries can sometimes exhibit this behavior (sudden, unexpected loss of power.) You can try swapping out the battery with a fresh one.

# Deepak said on June 8, 2005 05:09 PM:

No Prob:)

I realized that I wrote "Name" for Name. I should get my batteries checked too :)

# Dan said on June 21, 2005 06:28 PM:

The Problem is with the heat sink theres a design flaw that causes the nuts that are soldered into the motherboard to come loose, the cpu overheats and shuts off. Compaq sells a repair kit for 40 dollars. Seems if apple can be sued for ipods that are 4 years old having batteries that diminish, a design flaw in a motherboard should come with a free fix

# Ken Almond said on June 21, 2005 07:58 PM:

Mine started doing that after 2 years of semi-heavy service. The first symptom wasexcessive fan activity. I just had my repaired (I think) and technician said it was overheating and internal 'kill on high temp' was kicking in. They fixed this by puting in new/modern/better (they said) heat sync on processor so it won't overhead anymore.

However, my fan is still running excessively much - annoying/loud.

# Henry said on August 26, 2006 11:07 AM:

I realize these posts are very old, but If any of you still has one of these Pressarios 2700 laptops I can buy from you to use for parts to repair mine, please email me at dishoncoffin@yahoo.com.

Cheers.

My Compaq Presario Model V4000 Series laptop is doing the same thing... Overheating and shutting down.  What's interesting is that I am a former Compaq employee  LOLOL and it was rather silly of me to even consider buying one, but the price point was good.

I'm assuming the problem is across the board on most of the 2-4 yr old laptops.  I'm going to research it and see if I still know anyone left on the service team.  It's annoying and in the interim I purchased a low end Toshiba.

# Yogesh said on December 11, 2006 05:18 PM:

Same problem with me...I have a Compaq R3000 and the fan is perpetually running full pace with a loud annoying noise. This happens with me running nothing on the PC but for Windows XP. Any strenous activity on the PC causes it to shut down due to overheating. I've tried cleaning the fans but to no use. Any help?

# Bruce said on December 17, 2006 06:49 AM:

My Compaq Presario 2711 AP was in a well padded bag that dropped about 3 feet during air travel :(

Now, when I start it up, it shuts down before fully loading XP, if not immediately. I sometimes get to enter my password, but it shuts down after I try to login. This is all using AC power. But I have  found that I can log in if I remove the AC and just use battery, and only if I go into Safe Mode. Safe Mode With Networking also works, so I *can* at least download email successfully... :) It's worth noting that the fan is seemingly working overtime during startup...If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated :)

This is a fairly common problem.  I've had atleast 4 Compaq Laptops with the exact same problem roll through my shop.  In all cases, so far, they have been all cpu heat/stress related which leads me to believe that what the gentleman posted earlier about the repair kit would be the best solution.  It may be necessary for those of you who noticed the Fan working overtime to compensate to replace fan assembly as well.

I have my presario 2700 opened and i found 3 diferent problems, the builders forgot to make a hole for admision air in the needed place,  the chip was separated from the difussor or cooler. the solution repair the space chip-cooler, make another admision hole for breath, i added a fan to the cooler, I cant belive the poor supervision of the basics details of compaq.    SALUDOS, LUCIO, MEXICO.

# mz said on January 4, 2007 01:19 AM:

Its the HEATSINK.  I had the same problem with the sam e exact model.  Aparently the heatsink comes loose after some time, as the bolts that hold it down 'give' and allow the heatsink to loosen just enough to allow for the CPU to overheat.  The heatsink sits right under the top left of the keyboard, and requires some minor dissasembly.  I found a brand new heatsink online for about $30 bucks and now my 2700 US works like a charm.

# Jon said on January 18, 2007 08:05 AM:

You guys have described my 2700 presario dilemma just perfectly.  I suspected heat problems were shutting me down unexpectedly, especially when I begin to make the cpu work full time.  Fan runs a lot on high speed, etc.

How do I get this thing apart without breaking anything.   I'm good at repair but do not know how to get to the fan.  I assume some of the keyboard keys must come off to get to screws.

Thanks, Jon

# jon said on January 24, 2007 02:30 PM:

My problem was the heat sink that come loose from the motherboard.  I have reaffixed it spproximately per Gilles and don't forget the heat sink paste.  It now works perfectly, no fan, etc.  To make it the best you can is to do some self engineering.  If you want to know how I did it, post a note and your address, I'll send you the details.  I tried to post my fix details on this web site but it was not published.

Don't drop your computer in the future.

My laptop compaq presario v2000 also has been shutting down and overheating, and in order to get it turn back on I have to take the battery out and put it back in. And then still when it is restarting it might shut down again.  I called compaq about the problem when it was under warranty and they were like "isn't it great that it has that safety feature to shut down when it gets too hot" what a bunch of crap lol so i sent it away to be serviced and they sent it back saying everything was fine!?! now my computer is out of warranty and getting worse, it shuts down everyday a few times a day, so i called them again and they wouldn't even talk to me unless i paid $50 upfront.  Such bad service.

Remove battery and press indentation on side of battery to see if green lites appear on power strip.  If not, the following will not work.  Also, to not have back up battery installed during the process following.  Presario 2715us will not start unless the power cord and the battery are removed, then reattached in the following order(plan A).  The power cord/adapter can remain pluged into the wall out let.  It only needs to be removed from the computer itself.  After you have removed both, reattach the power cord to the back of the computer first.  Next slide the battery back into place.  Look to see if the LED,s on the front of the computer near the latch both flash when you insert the battery.  If not, restart the process again until they do.  Now the LED showing that the power cord is attched should remain lit.  Try pushing the on/off button to start the computer.  If this fails, go to plan B.  Remove both items as per above instructions and reattach power cord.  When putting the battery back into position, hold down the on/off switch.  This should cause the power cord lite to stay on.  Now, do back to plan A and repeat the process.  It has worked for me. Cheap fix for over heating is a flyfan hooked to a usb with the airflow directed into the computer. How do I remove the keyboard or computer base to get at the motherboard?

# tyler said on July 1, 2007 06:58 PM:

My v2000 has been doing the same exact thing. the problem is actually overheating. For some odd reason HP decides to put a thin piece of aluminum foil that seperates the processor from the thermal paste. All I did was remove my HD and battery. then unscrewed every screw and removed the bottom plate. I then took the screws out of the coolant system and removed it to reveal the processorand GPU. at the bottom of the coolant system was a piece of aluminum which I removed. Cleaned out any lint or dust build-up near the CPU/GPU, Then took off the thermal paste from the bottom of the cooling system and spread it evenly directly on the processor heat concentrator. I Put the cooling system back on correctly (must be as tight as you can possibly make it) and screwed the bottom plate back on/ put HD and battery in. Sounds complicated but it really isnt. Also, my CPU temperature is at an all time low of 35-37 degrees (C) browsing the internet.  Im not sure if this Voids warranty, but this fix has done wonders and I dont get anymore random shutdowns. I hope this helps some people.

# Dodger said on July 4, 2007 08:10 PM:

to all of you that have a dead Compaq v2000 series and dont know why:

if your Compaq used to shut off randomly, and now it doesnt turn on at all, then (i think) your System Board or something on it is fried. i know this because for the longest time my Compaq did just that, it shut it self off and often it turned it self back on, too. then one day it shut it seof off, i turned it back on, and it shut off again, and wouldn't turn back on. i sent it in for repair under warrenty, and HP/Compaq says that they replaced the System Board, and (for apparently no reason) the hard drive. it works now, but it is starting to have a similar problem, only when on battery power though. but the odd part about it is that  the last time i had it on battery, it shut itself off 3 times, but 2 weeks later, i run it for 5 days straight (today will be the 6th day) it has run with out a hitch. i called Compaq support, and they offered to replace the battery under warranty.

So for all of you that have failed Compaqs, it is most likely the system board, aka motherboard, logic board.

# Robin said on July 5, 2007 08:18 PM:

anyone have the computer get so hot where the charger plugs in that it just melted into the laptop?

It doesn't shut itself off, it just gets too hot (not the CPU, but the left corner of the machine)  This is a V2410US that is about 20 months old.  I paid close to $1000.00 for it at Cicuit City, so I don't want to just junk it, but the warranty was only 1 year!

my problem is similar to what I've been reading in this thread except for this difference: My R3000 shuts down while rebooting only when the power cord is attached to the laptop.  If it's starting up under battery power it works fine.  I can work while I have battery power, go into stand-by mode and plug the power cord in to recharge the battery, then go back to working after taking the power cord off.  If I leave the power cord attached after charging the battery then it shuts down.

I'm glad I stumbled on this blog site.  My 2911US started shutting down even before booting.  At first I thought I had a virus or spyware, but then noticed the fan was running full-force.

I took the unit apart (since it is 19 days out of the extended warranty - go figure) and found that the thermal paste between the heat sink and the processor was all but non-existent.

I cleaned both parts with alcohol and placed a small, rice-sized bead of thermal paste on the processor and voila - no more problems.  In fact, the fan hardly kicks in when I'm using the laptop for general web browsing and word processing.

You would think that HP would spring for the couple of cents it costs to do the job right, eh?

Hope this is helpful to future readers.

I have a v2000, diff prob but kinda the same. recently the laptop would die when i pull the ac out even with the battery in (fully charged). It would take 2-3 sec before it shuts off.  When i try to turn it on with the battery it would get 5 sec into the boot cycle and shut off.

I purchased a new battery and the same thing occurs. I have once gotten both batteries to work normally once or twice but now I'm unable to get the battery to work even when it says its fully charged!

Does anyone out there have the same symptoms?

My laptop was shutting down repeatedly and the fan was going full blast. I called Compaq and they refused to help me. I had purched the extended warranty for $199.00 previously but unfortunatly that warranty had expired. Mind you, I purchased this warranty when the Compaq laptop I originally bought went bad. I had to send it in six times with the same problem and then they finally gave me a new labtop. When I called about this problem and they refused to help I contacted the Better Buisness Bureau. Compaq then called me and offered to fix my computer. I got it back and they stated they replaced the fan. Guess what, it's been two months (right outside the lone time only repair warranty) and it is doing it again. Go figure.

# Paul said on August 10, 2007 01:14 AM:

Wow, my compaq has been doing the overheating thing for months now, and myself being not so great with computers only "thought" this may be the problem. I am happy to say I am comfortable right because I elevated the computer and it seems to be overheating less.

My compaq will randomly freeze for about 5 minutes then mysteriously regain consciencness, and all be good. It will repeat the beahvior every hour or so. Last night it made a terribly loud beep and just turned off.

This morning I turned it on and seem to be going fine.

I had an Acer Travel Mate that did the exact same thing, then a few weeks later just died :( Not having much luck with laptops :(

People on here seem to be all saying the same thing about their 2-3 year old v2000 compaq computers. This laptop I bought in October 2005. One year warranty from Compaq- THEN things stuff up. Personally its like its done purposely!

I called Compaq and they requested for me to take to my nearest compaq repair service center- one and half hours from where I live, AND that I would be responsible for all repairs because its's out of warranty.

Forget that- I back up all my documents every second day, and now I am just waiting for it to blow up.

HOWER if some wonderful peson out there has information they can email about perhaps locating the fan and cleaning it. that would be great! Its was such a handy computer, (when it worked properly) I would really love to save it!

Ok guys, I am back!

A couple of weeks later and still my laptop is lasting. BUT I have a handy hint for all you people with overheating compaq's- buy a $12 desk fan and place it over the computer keyboard. If you are one like me who can't afford a new computer or the rediculous repair prices, this works great! Its a good idea for people who use there computers at a desk. You may look like an idiot- but at least ya computer will last! A normal fan is so much stronger than them cooling pads you can buy, AND half the cost :D.

So keep cool in summer and keep ya compaq cool- all at once :P

# Steve Marshall said on August 27, 2007 04:59 PM:

This happened to me starting in the last 2 days with my Compaq R3000 laptop.

I opened up the bottom where the fans are and noticed that the intak for air for one fan was clogged.   I blew it out and it looks like it ok for now.

# Steve Marshall said on August 27, 2007 09:20 PM:

Yes, after i cleaned out the little silver intake for one of the fans it works like a charm.  I had to use high pressure air from an air gun.   Its really quiet and isn't getting hot now.   The fan runs very quietly now.   Before it was going full and the machine was still hot.    The machine has a temp sensor that runs the fan faster when needed.

So for those of you that are lucky this may be your problem.   Its on the right end of the computer underneath.     I did take off the cover over the fans to do this.

I started a small computer business 9 years ago dealing in only used laptop computers but this problem was never one i had to deal with until now. I buy skids of used, off lease, untested laptops. I repair, upgrade and re-sell them. yourwaycomputers2002@yahoo.com

Ahh I have a Compaq V2000 as well and know nothing about computer besdies Compaq is not the best!

I bought this computer a little over a year ago before I left for college and within 6 months of having it- the computer was shutting off all the time.

Then since the computer would overheat so much it was burning the metal part on the power strip that i had to buy a new power cord and a new battery. its only matter of time before this new cord gets burnt out too.

does anybody know of a good computer brand besides apple where they dont overheat so much?

Hey

I too, unfortunately, purchased two compaq notebooks...one is the V2000 series, the other is R3140...Both suck! I replaced the mother board and hard drive in the V2000 three months after I purchased it....The R3140 has had to have a new mother board replaced as well...After the mother board was "supposively" replaced by Comp USA the computer would continue shutting down...After numerous trips to Comp USA and replacing not only the mother board, but fans, and AC jack, it still does not work properly...The last time I took the R3140 in to get serviced the warranty expired, I was told the battery was bad and the Laptop was just dirty with a bad fan....I did not purchase a new battery at the time but had the fans replaced and cleaned as advised...Now today, with an expired warranty and a notebook that was never properly serviced I have a worthless R3140 because none of the above fixed the problem and the laptop has progressed to a worse level...I can't keep the R3140 running...It will boot up windows but the fans turn on full blast like its's overheating and shuts off...What a joke Comp USA is! Their customer service sucks! They basically told me online through their tech support to junk the computer and buy a new laptop....Gees I WILL NEVER EVER buy another Compaq or any computer from Comp USA again! Horrible Horrible customer service!

Compaq aka HP aka piece of overheated junk.

I bought my lappy(1700) in 2002, One year later , the motherboard fried, 2 years later and it overheats and the USB is dead.

Compaq, when it still was Compaq, used to be a great company. My desktop ( which is almost 10 years old and running 98 ) runs much better than my mothers newer HP  (supposed to be about 2 times faster).

After seeing this blog, I don't think I'll be getting another Compact  pre-sh!t-e-o

Ugggh ~ my R3000 (a 2000 model) has been horrible the last 6 mos ~ i've had so many problems with it since we purchased it.. about 6 mos after buying it the hard drive crashed (irretrievably ~ i lost a 1,000 pics and all my music).. replaced that.. ran ok for about 6 mos. .then this horrible whirring (not always, it's freaky.. ) and sometimes it sounds like grasshoppers munching ~ now, the last 3 weeks or so every few minutes the fans get really loud and everything locks up the only way to get any movement at all is by using the ctr/alt/del.. grrrrr...

i would love to know how to remedy this ~ but im' definitely buying a new laptop next week !!!

Hi there.  I had the exact same problem.

For me, it was the fan that had knocked out, making my laptop overheat and battery pack hot as well.  I noticed when I could turn it on for a while in winter (it shut down in the summer) and that the fan never turned on at all.  Since replacing the fan, my laptop has never died once, but it's still warm (though my battery pack is fine).  Hope this helps.

As an aside, I feel that we should start a class action lawsuit against compaq as alot of ppl seem to be having this problem, and right after the one year warranty expiration mark too!  Is anyone with me LOL?

my v2000 wold shutdown after a few min or running while plugged in. i determent that the power supply was working fine. the battery, thow depleted was in great condition. so i did a little dissembling and found that the power jack was not making a continues  connection. i make sure it is sodered to the board properly and it was.  so with the battery removed and the power supply unplugged from the wall (not to brake my broken laptop) i plugged the the plug in to the jack and notes'ed that the center pin in the jack moved. the ppl that put the jack together for Compaq (HP) used a cheap metal to make the center pin, and thay did a pore job riveting the pin to the jack. well since i am cheap i desideded  not to replace the jack (seeing the price that ppl are charging to do it). i wiped out the old soldering iron and soldered a soled connection (if you do this to a v2000 or smiler configuration use a high temp solder, thy put the heat sink to close to the power jack with no heat shielding these laptops get fairly hot). it works great now with no problem. p.s remember where all the screws go.

I think that the biggest problem is design, they did not designed good airflow, and to put power components and cpu in the same place was the "brightest" idea. design of heatsink is also "brilliant". lots of clogs get there. Having the same issue w/ my 2 1/2 year old Compaq V2000 laptop... gets really hot near the key board, as does the AC Adapter.

Two days ago it started flashing between battery power & AC power every second, it couldn't hold a charge. I took battery out and plugged in directly via AC adapter, this worked for about an hour, then it suddenly powered off by itself. I put the battery back in & connected... took a few tries to get it running. Was able to get battery to charge up to 64% and ran battery check; which said I need a new one though the cells are still near the "good" indicator. Then it stopped charging & I ended up burning pictures/important documents to cd while I at least had some battery power left! Got most items burned to disc before battery died.

I have a new battery (via ebay since HP's website states they are out of stock) and a new ac cord (via HP) on order, so hopefully those will fix issue.

Though I think it could be a heat sink or motherboard issue too?

Probably best off buying a new laptop eh? Definitely won't buy an HP again, probably will go back to Dell - my prior Dell notebook lasted 5 years!

If you have heatsink fix, please contact me at windexgirl@gmail.com

Thanks!

i have a v2000 and it started shutting off a couple of days ago, my hard drive was clicking and wasn't booting up either.  i thought my laptop was fried.  i bought a new hard drive and installed xp on it again.  it worked but was still getting hot and shutting off.  it wouldn't even turn on with the battery and ac power.  i used it without the battery and it worked but was still very hot.  after reading some posts here, i decided to open it up  and check the fan.  the fan seemed to be fine other than a little dust inside and around it.  i still took the fan out to take a closer look and noticed a  thick layer of dust between the fan and the power supply.  the air just wasn't getting to the power supply.  i cleaned the dust and put everything back together.  now everything works great.  i can run it on battery alone, ac and batter and ac alone.  it even blows cold air now when the fan is on and the left corner is much cooler than before.  i hope this helps some of you since it doesn't require any soldering or repair work... just keep track of the screws because i have one left over and no idea where it goes (i don't feel like opening up the laptop again just for that one screw)

# Jason said on June 1, 2008 09:37 PM:

We all already know that the R3000 has a power jack problem. I just replaced one and it accually is not hard to replace with the right equipment, the hard part is getting to it. The laptop has to be completely disassembled. A co-worker gave the laptop to me because a computer shop had told him it couldn't be repaired and once i tore into it i discovered the power jack was broken at the very back portion of it and not on the board itself but had to be replaced anyway...as for the overheating, as of yet this one hasn't overheated but you have to remember they crammed a P4 into a small space. My suggestion would be to get a slower processor, maybe a celeron, since the jack is a standard socket 478 and that may help with some of your heating issues.

A lot of this is similar to what I'm experiencing with my my Mother-in-Law's laptop. Here's what happened:

- Computer was running fine for over a year

- One day it just died and wouldn't boot

- Mom asked me to look at it.. I pulled the battery out, popped it back in and voila.. it boots

- It runs for a while and then dies again

- Won't boot and not even any LED's lit when plugged in to AC

- Pulled the battery out

- Won't boot on AC alone, and still no lights on

- Unplugged the AC, put the battery back in

- Won't boot to battery alone

- Plugged AC back in.. LED's come on.. hmmm

- Boots and... doesn't even get to Windows

- Went to Fry's and bought a new battery

- Boots and works... but only for a minute.. WTH?? It's not even WARM any more, let alone hot enough to overheat

- Tried a new power adapter.. no difference..

- Let it sit for a couple weeks and forgot about it until Mom called to say "umm.. hello? my laptop?"

- Took it apart, made sure everything was clean

- Removed the heat sink and fan.. this one is held on SOLID.. not loose like described in other posts

- Reinstalled heat sink and fan

- Put most of the machine back together but left the bottom case off so I can observe the fan working (or not)

- It's now been running for over an hour and I've been taxing the CPU and memory

- The fan comes on as needed and it hasn't crashed

- Next step: re-assemble everything and see if it crashes, and figure out why it doesn't work on AC alone...

Still doesn't sound like the issue is solved. What do I need here? Better airflow? Replace heat sink? Add thermal goo as described above? Other?

# mhallsj said on June 11, 2008 07:56 PM:

Update on above:

After re-assembling the machine, everything is working fine, including running on AC power alone.

I'll have my kids "burn it in" for a couple days. If anyone can crash it, they can!

I'll update if anything changes..

my v2000 is doing the same. Shutting off Constantly. I had a heap of dust between the fan on CPU wads of dust blocking air flow.there are alot of screws to take out, but its fairly simple to get to (there are about 6 screw behind the battery).im going to buy a fan to replace the old the fan. it  is held in by two screws and only seems to be working half the time.  the new fan for about $60-70 US  onlne and also im going to try some thermal paste directly on the CPU. this is cheaper than the stupid Compaq dealers who want to charge alot.it seem these laptops have problems after about 2 years.(or sometimes even earlier).if the above doesnt work, im not messing around, ill by a cheap Toshiba.also  I might cut afew plastic pieces out of the casing where the air goes in, just to give the fan a little help. BTW HP makes these Compaq Laptops.

I have a V3000, does the same thing with not turning on. I called compaq and they gave me a case no. took it to the repairer. they replaced the motherboard, hdd, ram and then it still wouldnt work so they ordered a new cpu. At that stage it had been 4 weeks, I told them it was taking too long so they marked it as DOA and Compaq is sending me a replacement. At this stage it is turning on but turning off after 1 minute. It is out of warranty but isnt costing me anything. Well done guys I think they have now accepted this as a big problem. Just hope the replacement has been re-engineered. I still dont know what to do about the problem with reinstalling windows as I had used the third install attempt and I hear you cant use the key after that, it this true and what can I do about it as it really is Compaq's fault.

I have had the V2000z for almost 3 years and I too have been having random BSOD and reboots.  I've done the Arctic Silver 5 thermal grease on the processor and I still get BSOD and reboots.  I've clean the heatsink and even taken out all that thermal tape and grease on the CPU and GPU.  I even put a 1962 penny with thermal grease on both side of the penny and put it on the GPU to see if the GPU was the cause of the problem. It seem that the GPU doesn't even need a heatsink cause that thermal tape that Compaq put on there I removed and and the computer runs fine but i have a Vornado fan blowing on it.

BTW I even have my computer undervoltage.  I think I have a Motherboard problem =/

Tim,

you got Compaq to replace your computer even though it's not under warranty anymore? I started having issues with my laptop V2000 right after I bought it in 2006, but I didn't use it that often so I just made do.  Now I am traveling a lot more and would love to use my computer - but keeps burning up the power cords.

SO many people are having the same issue - it seems.  I would contact Compaq but I purchased my computer via CompUSA (the worst company to buy a compute EVER--- no wonder they closed so many stores in my area).

Anyway -- I guess I will try and see if I can get Compaq to help me with my problem

# Chris said on September 5, 2008 08:07 PM:

I remedied this problem for a client's computer by doing the following:

-Removing the bottom of the notebook to access the HSF assembly.

-Removing the cheap "tinfoil" contact material from the HSF

-Carefully removing the black plastic "ring" from around the CPU contact area on the HSF

-Cleaning the contact point on the HSF thoroughly. Then polishing it with a compound to give it a perfectly flat and smooth surface.

-Cleaning the top of the CPU

-Applying some good thermal compound to the top of the CPU

-Reassemble.

This fixed the issue with the particular unit I was working on.

Symptoms were:

-Fan running on high, but no real heat coming out the back of the unit

-Random shut-downs

F767NR, this is the actual model no. (F700 is written on top right of the screen frame).

AGE and USAGE:

JUST 4 months old! (frustrating! really) and i only use it for academic purposes, about thrice a week only.

PROBLEM:

It shuts down all by itself even if i'm just playing music, and no other programs. It happened around a month ago and started again about a day ago and became more frequent (around thrice in three hours with just a single program running). I also noticed that the top left was unusually warm (indicative of overheat) whenever this happened. I couldn't find any online support for my model in the HP website

Anyone having the same problems? Solutions?

# Chris C. said on September 20, 2008 10:11 AM:

I have the V2000z with Turion.

Seems like my sudden shut down is caused by either

1.) a heat problem, where the loose heatsink is causing the unpredictable shut down.

2.) A defective motherboard something is causing it just to shut down for no reason.

3.) Bad memory.

A defective motherboard can also cause memory to go bad.

Heat can cause both motherboard and memory to go bad, if hot enough.

Mine started the trouble during a 2 week trip to Asia.  It stopped one day when I was on the toilet.  I got a BSOD :-p  After that, I had no luck in reviving it.  I don't think using it on the toilet broke it either.

I then changed the memory.  That brought it back to life long enough for me to boot Windows and run a program.  Then it would shut off again.

Next, I disassembled the laptop to find any visible shorts and to take off the heatsink and apply Arctic Silver 5.  That allowed the notebook to last much longer.  At least an hour or so until it would shut down again.  Right now, I am not sure if it is a Motherboard problem or it is in fact a heating issue.

I have had this laptop for 1.5 years before having any issues.  It was just during the trip, something caused it to die.  Was it the heat sink, X Rays, or my flatulence that kill it? hehe

Oh.  BTW:  To fix the heat sink problem, you have to unscrew the bottom of the lappy.  Then locate heat sink.  Locate the four silver screws with springs.  Unscrew and remove heatsink.  Wash with alcohol or naphtha.  Wipe top of processor with alcohol or naphtha.  Apply a rice sized bead of heatsink compound on top of processor.  Remove stickers on underside from heatsink including the silver piece of metal stuck where the CPU is. Rinse more with alcohol. ***(optional) Resurface the heatsink with a high grit sandpaper and some sort of a polishing compound.  Rinse again with alcohol.***  Apply heatsink compound on graphics card.  Spread the compound thinly.  Reapply heatsink and screw back on, then replace cover.

This worked for all my laptops except this v2000z

# BigBadBiologist said on September 29, 2008 10:32 PM:

I've dissected a Compaq V2555 (basically same as V2000 but with AMD CPU) and I think I found the source of a lot of the issues.  The center pin of the DC jack becomes loose from the metal in the back of the jack.  This causes intermittent connection and lots of resistance.  This leads to a lot of heat around the jack area and even led to a partially melted AC adapter plug in my case.

To fix this, I soldered the DC jack pin to the surrounding metal.  The area no longer gets hot and the AC adapter plug no longer gets hot.

Unfortunately, now I have an issue where the laptop doesn't want to charge when the laptop is powered on.  Compaq, way to put out a crappy product!

If anyone needs this work done, you can e-mail me at bigbadbiologist at netscape dot net.

I have a V2000 and last night it was overheating and shutting down a lot. I had just reinstalled XP like a week before. I ran Spybot and it kept stopping and shutting down as soon as it got to a file called virtumonde.dll. It did this quite a few times. So since I didn't have anything important on my drive I figured I would format and reinstall but I couldn't finish a format without it shutting down so I thought I was screwed. So I took out the hard drive witch was seriously hot and let it cool overnight. Today I was able to reformat and reinstall XP no prob. I ran Spybot no prob. I think it was that Trojan virtumonde.dll making my cpu and memory work overtime till it shut down. I have had no problems since this morning and have been running the laptop all day. I took it apart and blew all the dust out of it with a compressor. My heat sink is different from the ones explained here and was not loose. The thing is my fan doesn't seem to come on when it should. Only at start up. I want to be able to control when it comes on. Any ideas?

# The Natural said on October 9, 2008 09:35 PM:

So if your having a problem with your fan coming on only at startup or not at all try upgrading your BIOS for you pc manufacturers website.

# Bdog52 said on October 13, 2008 12:40 PM:

I have had an overheating problem due to the heat sink hold down nuts pulling out of the motherboard and have discovered a way to fix the problem. Dan is correct about he $40 fix, but if you are handy with a soldering iron you can do the job yourself. The brass hold down nuts as well as the board will still have some solder on them, so place the brass nut back in it's original position on the board then insert the pointed end of the soldering iron into the nut and in a few seconds you will notice the solder melting around the nut on the motherboard. When this happens turn the iron slightly to the left then right to seat the nut (make sure the nut is straight up) then using something to hold the nut down slip the soldering iron out and let the nut cool down. Repeat on all dislocated hold downs. Mine has held up for a year now. If need be add a small amount of new solder. I hope this is helpful.

I told him that as I couldn't get to his place until the weekend after next at earliest he should maybe take it to a repair shop for them to have a look at.

If they try to charge excess fees or tell him it can't be fixed I will tell him to hang on so I can see if it's the lose heat sink .

# compaq_owner said on October 22, 2008 02:42 AM:

i was browsing the net looking for a replacement part for my compaq r4000, and i stumbed upon this.

i hope this helps.

anyway, a while back after heavy usage, my laptop would just shut down on it's own. before-hand, it would get super warm and the processor would slow down. after a bit of tinkering around, i figured out that the processor was overheating and there was some sort of internal killswitch. (which is good)

i'm an online gamer so this was unacceptable.

i took it apart, and low-and-behold i found wads of dust/lint in there comparable to my dryer (for clothes. lol) caked onto the heatsinks.  seriously i'm talking major dust.

so i took some time and cleaned it all out. i even bought canned air.

once it was cleaned out, and put back togehter my laptop ran like new. speed was all there again, and my processor stayed well below 55 degrees celcius.

now i don't recommend everyone do this, because it's not a simple feat, taking apart a laptop.  some might argue otherwise, but then again let's keep in mind murphy's law.

now before you go off cursing HP/Compaq, keep in mind how you use your laptop.

i used to keep it literally in my lap, or on my bed most of the time.  now again, think of the dust i mentioned inside...now think of where i'd operate it most of the time.  it's a no brainer.

so now i keep it on a hard surface to minimize dust intake.  i only have to clean it out once a year, and this thing runs fine.

i also recommend getting some software that allows you to control your notebook's hardware.  one program i found is NHC. it shows me CPU temperature, HD temperature, amoungst MANY other things.  it also allows me to control my processor's speed.  most processors have the quiet~cool mode, where it shifts between speeds.  (this means it never runs at full speed.  again unacceptable for an online gamer)  NHC allows me to force my CPU to run at full capacity, meanwhile not overclocking or overheating anything.

anyway, sorry for the long reply, but i hope this helps.

if your laptop is overheating, or the processor seems to be lagging out more often, or your computer suddenly shuts down, this could be the problem.

now, i know this was started with a different model in mind, but i've found this to be common throughout laptops in general.

# New Compaq said on October 25, 2008 02:00 AM:

Hey everyone....

I had been having this same problem for awhile now. It finally pissed me off enough to do something about it last night.

I figured I may as well see if it was a clogged heatsink causing the CPU to overheat. I took out the heatsink...really easy and sure enough there was tons of lint (like a dryer filter) caked over it. No wonder the fan wasn't cooling the thing.

I blew the lint out with compressed air and reassembled everything....works great now!!!

# Pyr0Beast said on November 9, 2008 11:28 PM:

Since it seems the previous comment hasn't been posted I start again.

If the laptop turns on, eg, lights are on, hdd is spinning, CPU fan turning, num lock not making response, but no picture on screen, then it is most likely the cause is the video-ram located on the under side of the laptop. It sometimes looses contact and you have to reseat it, that is put it out, grab a clean paper towel, brush the golden plated contacts a couple of times with the paper, then sit it back in. Watch there are no paper remains on it.

Ram sticks are held to the socket by the clips on each side, -bend- them a bit outwards to release the stick, it will most likely pop out automatically.

Check the main, system ram as well, following the same procedure.

Watch for ESD and unplug every power source from the laptop (power plug and main battery).

# Kyle said on November 12, 2008 09:21 PM:

I just had mine died.

It's the design flaw. The heat sink and fan attract dust and mine was clogged with a thick carpet of it. The heat sink dissipates heat of CPU and the graphic chip. My guess is either or both of them toasted since I have no way of testing it. HP should advise all laptop owners to open the case and clean the heat sink or simply put a door on top of it.

There should be class action lawsuit from thhis. I am complaining to places such as Califonia BBB, you home state BBB or comsumer protection agency, Federal trade commission and electronics manufactuers association and etc.

HP should recall the lemon!

# Pyr0beast said on November 20, 2008 05:55 AM:

How would gathered dust be a case for a lawsuit ? Just like you need to replace a bag on your vacuum cleaner you need to clean the laptop/PC from time to time, eg, once every 12 months is perfect, less if you have the computer in a place with lot of textiles like bedroom. Heat is the biggest enemy of electronics.

Sometimes it is just a broken on switch, which results that lappy can't be turned on.

When you plug in a power source, lights should blink for a split second, if they don't, there's something wrong in the power-section of the laptop.

# shapstak said on November 29, 2008 01:59 PM:

after my compaq R4000 with XP did same exact thing...

try taking out batt (probably doesn't matter but I did)

after first failure, plug in a/c to comp and wall, wait at least 30 minutes for comp to cool off. find out what bare min start up apps needs to run according to your OS. Go to start menu click run..type msconfig and turn off all the other crap in there. Restart. I think running too much junk in background causes the comp to "think to much" on start up , makes the fan run like crazy, then shuts off due to overheating. Worth a try when all else fails. Just takes 1 virus to to invade your start menu/ registry and crew everything up. But if you turn if off it will not run on start up anymore. Less work your comp has to do.

I'm doing this now.. will update...

I finally figure what to do to fix your problem of over heating. I took computer apart. blew the dirt with a vacuum put new heat sink gel. and on the case where the heater sink and heater fan sits felt the area on the cover case to feel the heat area and drill holes with a small drill bit over that area to allow the heat to escape. also bought those new heat units to seat the laptop. the computer shut down at first...now it runs all day without shutting down. The computer runs well. I did not bought anything just clean the heat sink and drill holes and runs great. I may also look into setting the bios temp lower if possible to improve performance. just drill the holds on the cover off the laptop. and look and feel the area of overheating. it is just a casing problem. and buy a cooler with two fans for underneat.  good luck. you do not have to buy no kits for repairs. it really works. bye

# Eduardo said on December 20, 2008 03:31 PM:

My solution was THIS: Since the Motherboard has holes already on it for the nuts that holds the screws... (those nuts that for all us detached away from the motherboard, leaving the heat sink detached) I made small holes from the outside in the bottom plastic case, went thru the the holes in the motherboard and thru the heat sink and finally grab some thin, long screws with the same detached nuts (those that were originally weld into the motherboard) So in that way I hold very strongly the heat sink. I turned on the laptop and the solution worked greatly BUT...I don't now why my keyboard and mousepad does not work at all. Both death from the very beginning, not even to enter BIOS. A 211 Keyboard ERROR appears when booting on the BIOS. I have able to use the Laptop with a USB keyboard and mouse. With those connected the laptop works great smoothly, no sound from the heat sink and the laptop runs even faster. BUT can you please help me with my keyboard & Mousepad problem ????

# Pyr0Beast said on December 24, 2008 01:08 AM:

Reseat the charger board (thing to which keyboard and mouse connect). You'll have to remove the upper plastic lid and screen to gain access to it.

# Pyr0Beast said on January 9, 2009 03:44 AM:

Check the battery status with its power gauge and charge the battery to full in a similar laptop.

Laptop adapter may put out 18.5Vdc, but when you plug it in it will collapse, but this is very unlikely.

Adapter-Jack broke off the mainboard. This can be the cause if you had problems with charging, like it won't charge and will still run of a battery.

If you need any more help with solving your problems, contact me @ pyr0beast@gmail.com

Since you did find the cause of shutting down is overheating we should now proceed to repair.

You will need.

A Phillips screwdriver (a small but a good one, with a good grip)

Something flat

Tongs

Soldering iron (60W if it isn't of a good quality)

Some tin for soldering

Paper masking tape (so you don't burn everything with your soldering iron)

Basically, what you will do is you will open the notebook, resolder broken nuts and put the whole thing back together.

I will post pictures and instructions of how to do that a bit later.

HI,i have the same problem but i figured out that when i have vista it doesnt shut down.. probably because vista has control over the heat of the computer and when it gets to hot it makes the performance lower.. but i have xp and i have to use a fan ..first i tried my moms blow dryer and put it on cold...and then i bought a fan for compaq and it works alot better than vista

You can actually get around this problem without fixing anything.  All you need is some stuff from your freezer.  For example, I use these small aluminum packets of Chinese pickled vegetables, kind of like Capri Sun.  What you need to do is to put one on top of your computer in the upper right corner, like slightly above the esc key, and then another one underneath the computer, this way you can cool it down enough that it won't shut down, just have to remember to change the packets every half an hour or so to get fresh old ones out of your freezer, if you freeze them right you shouldn't have to worry about any water dripping onto your computer or anything like that.
