Unlocked! My Audiovox 5600 SMT

Published 06 July 05 10:54 PM | russnem

So today I had my Audiovox 5600 SMT Smartphone unlocked, and I thought I'd have a lot more control over it. The truth is, I still cannot remove the stupid mMode icon from the Start menu and I don't appear to have any more control over the phone than I did (such as the ability to view "hidden" stuff or access the registry of the phone.

I'm sure this is merely because I am not familiar with what the true results of unlocking a phone should be, but can anyone out there offer any advice on the things that I CAN do with my phone now that it is unlocked versus what I was capable of doing before?

Unlocking purely means that you are free to use simcards from other networks in your phone, rather than being locked into the provider that originally supplied the phone.

Very rarely, if ever will unlocking your phone give you access to other features or services.

It sounds like you have a (perhaps crippled) provider branded firmware installed on your phone. The only way that you could get the full functionality and original graphics and customisation back is to get your phone flashed with the manufacturers firmware.

Check this: http://www.modaco.com/Disable_mMode_on_SMT_5600l-t205357.html

That is correct. Or you could google your butt off and find useful information about that Audiovox 5600 SMT. For the Siemens S55/S65 for instance, certain operator/provider specific customization is a hidden directory in the file system where on the phone itself hidden files en directories are by default really never visible. You can remove such things by using the interface software that makes the phone a drive in your Windows explorer and or with a certain key-sequence 'trick' to enable viewing hidden items in the on-phone file explorer. Good luck!

clarification?

i think what Russ is trying to say is that he application unlocked his phone, not sim-unlocked his phone. im assuming this because the audiovox 5600 SMT is a smartphone (and besides the guy above already told you what sim-unlocking is...)

well anyway, application-unlocking your phone does not reveal any new features, it merely means u can install apps that are not digitially signed.

this explains it better: http://www.pockettv.com/faq.html#unlock
(Note: the 1st paragraph is about application LOCKED smartphones... wonder who made that doozy of an error?)

How did you go about unlocknig your Audiovox 5600? I am in Europe and would love to use this phone while I am here. Thanks for the input.
