Audiovox SMT 5600 vs. Lower Manhattan

My wife and I were in New York City on vacation last week and we decided to split up for 3 hours one afternoon. I decided to head for lower Manhattan and she decided to stay up at 82nd street to go to the Met. I went to college in lower Manhattan and I wanted to revisit my old neighborhood as well as visit the WTC. I used my Smartphone to check my email on the way to the 86th street station. I was going to take the express train all the way down to the City Hall station. I had charged my phone earlier that day to roughly 2/3s of full power. I stepped out of the subway at City Hall and my phone was dead. I couldn't turn it on. I took out the battery, put it back in, and tried a few other things. Nothing worked. Luckily Cingular stores are about every 2 block in Manhattan, so I stopped in one and asked her to plug my phone in using the wall charger. The phone was then able to power up. Once we took it off the power cord, though, it was dead again. 2 hours later I got back on the subway and took it to 86th street. I walked to the Met, bought a hot dog, and sat on the steps to wait for my wife. On a hunch I took out my phone and pressed the power button. The phone powered up just fine, and when I went to the power meter it had about 2/3s of the battery left. Can anyone explain this truly odd behavior?

Eric,

I lived right outside New York in Hoboken, NJ and travel into the city all of the time. Never experienced anything like what you describe.

Must have felt a little bit like the twilight zone.
