Windows Live Messenger Beta

Published 07 January 06 12:56 PM | russnem

Today I downloaded and installed the Windows Live Messenger Beta and I have to say that I feel the team behind this product is really heading down the wrong road.

It's clear that their INTENT was to make it really easy to use and user-friendly, but in truth the interface is quite clumsy and kind of follows the general "More is Better" motto that I feel exists behind many Microsoft products with the exception of the developer tools. This approach bubbles many of the features to the top in a (hopeful at best) attempt at a user interface, but unfortunately as with Windows Media Player 10 and many other products this new version of Messenger misses the mark.

So awkward and unappealing is the user interface that I actually have no desire to dig deeper and play with any new or improved features in the product.

I generally dislike giving negative reviews. I feel it can be discouraging to those who worked hard on a product and take pride in it. In this case, however, I really feel that instead of keeping up with the Jones', it's time to step out AHEAD of the Jones' - and not just with Messenger.

[12 hours later]
I have uninstalled the Windows Live Messenger Beta and put the latest release version of MSN Messenger back on my system and I'm a lot happier.

I hate to say it but I kind of agree with you. I was so dissappointed with it I went to the point of going to the feedback page and sending them some of my comments. I think it's try to be too much to too many people. The default way of organizing buddies was way different than how I had it previously set up, too. All of a sudden I had a ton of names of people that are in my Hotmail contacts list - which are 10x the number of people I chat with over IM. It was annoying, to say the least, to have to figure out how to get rid of all of them through the Tools > options > general settings.

# Gregor Suttie said on January 8, 2006 01:34 PM:

Couldnt agree more - messenger beta is new but i dont see any improvements in it or anything new thats worthwhile.

It was in the add/remove programs for me - sorry, I'm not sure what else to suggest unless you can track down an uninstall program somewhere in "Program Files".

Goto Start, Run: and then paste this

MsiExec.exe /I{FCE50DB8-C610-4C42-BE5C-193F46C6F812}

and then press Enter, and it will do it for you

A granddaughter, age 13, visited us last month and, with my permission, installed this ugly program after promising to remove it at departure. Yes, she forgot, but did put me onto Google and there I found Lance's message of September last year. I gave my forehead the heel of my hand and cried a loud DUH! and a great THANKS to LANCE!! I'm free again.

I stumbled on how to uninstall it without going through all that 'code' stuff.  just go to google, and search for the website where you installed it.  RE-install it -- and it will pop a box up giving you 2 choices - one, REPAIR and the other choice says, REMOVE.  Click remove and tada... it's gone. it worked for me even when the code didn't.  See yas!

# Gem said on August 25, 2007 12:27 PM:

# Heather said on October 23, 2008 03:29 PM:

To my last comment, I should stress, if you are in anyway uncertain about this process DO NOT TOUCH!!!!

# Heather said on October 23, 2008 07:45 PM:

Go to C:\Windows\regedit.exe

Click to open

Go to Edit > Find OR Ctrl F

Type in Live Messenger > Enter

On the left hand side of the box will be a list of files under the heading Data.

Search for files with windows messenger, msn, live messenger or windows live and delete all instances.

Once you get to the end of the list press F3 and the registry will be scanned for further instances, delete anything again with the above files names til you reach the end of the list.

F3 again and repeat until a box pops up saying no further instances found.

This removes all traces from the registry.  You can then reinstall the older version of messenger.

BE WARNED - IF YOU ARE IN ANY WAY UNCERTAIN ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE DOING, DO NOT CARRY THIS OUT.  IF YOU REMOVE THE WRONG FILES YOU COULD CRASH YOUR WHOLE SYSTEM.

# Heather said on October 23, 2008 09:36 PM:

I forgot to say, you should carry this out once you have uninstalled all your windows live beta stuff.

OK I have a solution too...

go to programmes

Go to messenger BETA

it opens box to uninstall or repair

click this box this opens list of things beta can install

then Uncheck all options INCLUDING messenger beta

and it will allow you to continue

it then starts to uninstall!

Why they didnt just add an uninstall option button beats me

Then once done you will have no issues installing the older version which you will find by googling 'windows messenger live'

Hope this helps

Hi there,  I hope you got here by reading from the bottom up on this page, not top down...

Go to the following location:

My Computer ==>

Local Disk (C:)  ==>

Program Files  ==>

Windows Live  ==>

Installer

You will find the following three files:

wlarp.exe

wloobe.exe

wlsres.dll

==> double click on wlarp.exe

It is the uninstaller/repair program

It worked for me

Good luck

Live beta hater i tried clicking on that thing but it wont open. I'm starting to get desperate!!!!!!!!!!! I really want something to get rid of it without having to download any other software. Can someone please explain more clearly how to uninstall it by reinstalling like where do i press uninstall. Is that before or after i press run to download?

WTFFF.  BETA SUCKS.

when i think i have deleted it, i go and try to get the old version back and it says newer version installed.

i go and unistall it and it says the same thing i deleted every single thing about windows live messanger beta.   and it still wont let me get my old one back.    the new version sucks it is horrible and i am hoping to see that they get rid of it.

I’ve built this tool that should remove any version of WLM. If you try it, I would appreciate a little feedback on the website.
