Flying to Dallas is now much easier
Traveling from Phoenix to Dallas is now much easier. I prefer to fly Southwest Airlines, because they always seem to be on-time. Flying into Dallas has always been crappy because there was never a non-stop on Southwest. The Wright Amendment has been in place for XX years that says Southwest Airlines isn’t allowed to fly into their own airport (LUV) from anything farther than a bordering state. I’m not sure of the history, but the rumor is that this was put into place by politicians, paid for by larger, national, airlines, that were flying out of Dallas, Ft. Worth (DFW).
Anyway; to Fly to Dallas on Southwest you’ve always had to make a stop in El Paso (ELP) or Albuquerque (ABQ). Not only do you have to make this stop, but because of the law you had to actually book two trips. One round trip from PHX to ELP/ABQ and another joining trip from LUV to ELP/ABQ to get home. The choreography to buy this ticket has always been painful, but worth it because of the savings.
I just booked my ticket for VSLive Dallas (where I’m delivering two ASP.NET Ajax talks) and I was surprised to find out that I can now buy a ticket from PHX-LUV because of Wright Law has been revoked. Since the law was just revoked, there aren’t any non-stops, but I’m sure there will be someday soon.
