Hot Off The Press! Team System Pricing & Licensing

[From Rob Caron]

Today, Rob and the VSTS team announced the pricing & licensing approach for MSDN, Visual Studio 2005, and Team System

In Summary (From Microsoft's Press Release)

  • Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition: $799 (upgrade: $549)
  • Visual Studio 2005 Tools for the Microsoft Office System: $799 (upgrade: $549)
  • Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition: $299 (upgrade: $199)
  • Visual Studio 2005 Express editions will be $49.

Subscription and renewal estimated retail pricing for Visual Studio 2005 Team System offers tremendous value relative to the traditionally costly life-cycle products in this segment; prices for volume licenses start at $3,191 including Software Assurance. More information about the estimated retail pricing for Visual Studio 2005 Team System can be found at http://www.msdn.microsoft.com.

Most Visual Studio users receive Visual Studio through an MSDN subscription, and MSDN provides Software Assurance for Visual Studio. Customers choose an MSDN subscription level and receive development and test licenses for Microsoft servers and applications along with an accompanying Visual Studio product. With Visual Studio Team System, customers will continue to receive these MSDN subscription benefits with the new line of subscriptions that complement the Visual Studio 2005 product line.

New Team System Product Names (From Rob)

  • Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite (includes all 3 role-based products below)
    • Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Software Architects

New MSDN Online Article: Install Steps for Team System

Check out the new MSDN Online article, which provides guidance on how to install Team System (link below)

Installing the December CTP Release of Visual Studio Team System (by David C. Bost)

I'm going to read it in detail later tonight (after the premiere of the Star Wars III: The Revenge of the Sith trailer (Airing on Fox, tonight sometime during "The O.C.")

But from my first glance, it appears to be concise and easy to follow!  Thanks David for the guidance!

ASP.NET Tournament Bracket Control

[From Jason Salas - Thanks Jason!]

It's that time of year again!  Selection Sunday is 6 days away!

I saw someone blog about this, and thought others might appreciate it...

Here is Tourney Logic's "Tourney Bracket Control", an ASP.NET v1.x User Control that provides rich management of tournament brackets.

End User Features:

  • Designed for entering end user picks extremely quickly.
    • Ability to choose teams at any round and auto fill backwards.
    • Drop-down boxes will filter teams from drop-down boxes based on previous selections
    • Ability to see which teams users picked won or lost
    • Shows entire bracket on one page.  This feature allows users to complete the bracket without having to go to multiple pages.
  • Try the live demos of the Tourney Bracket Control in action
    • NCAA "March Madness" Basketball Tournament Sample
    • NBA Playoff Sample
    • Major League Baseball Playoff Sample
    • NFL Playoffs Samples with first round byes and re-seeding after the first round.
    • First Round Bye Bracket Sample

This would be a GREAT control for any sporting event, Pinewood Derby races, little league baseball tournaments, etc...

My New .NET Community Position

Just wanted to blog about an exciting opportunity that presented itself...

I just signed on as the Program Director for the Plano .NET User Group  North Dallas .NET User Group (as announced last night).  Jason talked briefly about some big changes in store for the group, new meeting location, etc..  It's going to be a lot of fun.  I'll be working with the rest of the NDDNUG team to continue shaping and growing the group to meet our member's needs.  We'll work with the best local and national talent to provide great content to the members, as well doing some neat things to promote collaboration between our members.   I'm really excited for this opportunity.

This means that I'm stepping down from my role as "Director of Speakers" for the Dallas .NET User Group.  The guys running the group, Dave, Roger, & Omar are doing a great job, and I wish them well.  DDNUG has shown some wonderful growth and great promise since we took over the group last year.  Now, DDNUG's 2005 calendar is booked, and the first 2 meetings for 2005 (Rob Howard & Brad Abrams) brought in 400+ people (200+ each)!   DDNUG has a great membership base and a great location - which makes for an AWESOME user group.

The Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex has many user groups - kudos to our local DE Brian Moore for helping support all of us - we know that is a lot to work.  (I mean, check out this list... Brian == Uber DE!)   Having soo many groups allows us to compliment each other, and provide a great .NET Community for everyone in the area!
