  • Gil Kirkpatrick of NetPro

Had a nice lunch today with Gil Kirkpatrick, CTO of NetPro . He's the brains behind a number of products that help enterprises manage Active Directory and other directory services. They've just released ChangeAuditor that tracks changes to Active Directory and a variety of other network configuration parameters. Pretty neat stuff. Gil's also a sailplane pilot and it's always good to get his perspective on flying. I'm used to flying behind a 250hp fan attached to the airframe, going from point A to

Microsoft has just released an updated whitepaper on pros and cons of creating multiple Active Directory forests in the Enterprise. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=b717bfcd-6c1c-4af6-8b2c-b604e60067ba

  • First eBay auction - Microsoft Wireless IntelliMouse

I'm selling my first item on eBay this week, a Microsoft Wireless IntelliMouse with a tiltwheel . I bought this item on impluse, and gave it a decent try, but I'm just not meant to move mice with my right hand. This particular mouse is shaped that actual pain is caused when using your left hand. My mousing woes are another story. I first tried offering the mouse to my co-workers, but no one replied back. So, I figured I'd try eBay. I've bought a couple of things there over the past few years, but

  • Commuting to Cisco

As I've alluded to in other posts, I'm now working at Cisco Systems doing consulting on their Active Directory infrastructure. I'm commuting from Seattle on a weekly basis, which is interesting. I fly down on Monday morning and leave Friday evenings. Alaska Airlines has a 6:25am flight from Seattle to San Jose . That means waking up at 4am. The flight is listed at just under hours, but so far, it’s never taken more than a hour and a half. I’m out of the San Jose airport by 8:40am. From

  • Source code leak fears apply to Linux too

I'm a little sick about how the industry press is reporting on the source code leak. The first reports were rip with speculation that competitors with Microsoft's applications would finally have a inside look and be able to compete fairly. That kind of thinking is just plain silly. It seems sinister, that some how the Windows developers can add things that help the Microsoft applications, but not document or make those additions publically available. Trust me, there is no MakeExcelRecalcFaster()

  • Political Activism's New Look

“ An opponent of President Hugo Chavez's government fires stones with a slingshot during a demostration in Caracas. Venezuela's election commission has postponed until Tuesday announcing whether a recall referendum against Chavez will be held. ” FYI, I'm not condoning the use of weapons to express someone's views.

  • Chuck installs Linux while watching pigs fly

I never thought I'd be doing this. As of 9:10am, Tuesday March 2, 2004, I have just started the installation of Linux on my IBM ThinkPad X20 laptop. Egads! FYI, for those who don't know me - I'm pretty much a dyed-in-the-wool Windows guy. Back in early 90's I was the hard core Windows guy in the OS/2 and MacOS wars. None of my friends where surprised when I started working for Microsoft in 1994. Heck, the UK magazine “The Guardian“ profiled me in 1995 as a “company man“, spouting

  • Google Spam

Is Google an infallible power ? Over the past few weeks, I've noticed that some of my Google searches are returning results from spammers. This has probably been a problem for awhile, but I'm now noticing a sharp increase. For the previous blog post, I wanted to provide a link to a shareware utility for filling up disk space. I put in "diskhog shareware" as the search. The third result of the set was listed as "diskhog for nt server", but what was stunning was the URL provided: www.coulterroadbaptist

  • Is rebooting a cure all?

I hate rebooting. Most people do. All too often though, it's the only way to get running again. Think it's a problem only to Microsoft Windows? Imagine having to do 130 reboots before you could get working again . That’s what NASA’s Mars rover Spirit had to do when it ran out of memory on January 21, 2003. Is Spirit running on Windows? No, it’s running VxWorks from Wind River . In the case of Spirit, the problem was due to 289MB of flash memory being filled up, causing various faults

  • Programming Directory Services with Microsoft .NET and XML

As many of you know, I wrote a popular developers book on Active Directory for Microsoft Press titled Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory Programming . When it was published in April 2001, I pleaded with Microsoft Press to not put “Windows 2000” into the title of the book, as it would seem obsolete when the next version of the Windows Server came out. In June of 2002, I was approached by the Directory Services documentation team and contracted to write the follow up book, focusing
