To be honest, Google is still one of my favorite search engines, but I really believe that no one will use Google in 5 years or so. The Google search engine is not a rocket science. - "Everyone" can build such a search engine. Google has just a good brand (and maybe a good business model) today - and I'm not sure if this brand will survive the next years. Have a look on what Google is doing since months: they invest in new markets (Gmail, Google Maps, Froogle, ....). Will Google really be our search engine in 5 years?

What about the German company Web.de? You will know Web.de as a very good web mailer today. But 5(?) years ago, we knew Web.de as a web catalog like Yahoo. That was their starting market. Maybe Google will be still there in 2010 but they will be not our search engine number one any longer. Ask the people of Altavista, they also can tell you a story about that ...

See you again in 2010.

SDA.NET Conference 2005 Singapore

SDA.NET Conference 2005 (May 24-27 2005) sessions online! And maybe you are interested in one of my proposals:

How to be prepared for future technologies? (#7)

Today we are waiting for the .NET Framework 2.0, Indigo, Avalon and many other technologies. The big question is: should we really wait? For small and short-running projects we may not. But what about a 3-year project? What can we do today to be prepared for future technologies? Should long-running projects be built on the .NET Framework 2.0 today? This session is intended for all who are involved in software development projects and are interested in experiences of others and their answers to the question how to manage the future.

.NET Migration Strategies (#20)

This year Microsoft has cut the free support for Visual Basic 6 and this is just the beginning of the end of these "old" technologies. While there are some white papers concerning how to migrate from classic VB to VB.NET, most questions are still open until today: How can companies migrate their hundreds of applications to .NET? What's the effort? Is migration or replacement the better approach? How much training need developers? This session is intended for all who have switched, are switching now or plan to switch tomorrow and are interested in the whole migration process, not only on a specific technical issue.

Sounds good? -- Let Damir know by sending him an email Damir.Tomicic@ineta.org

Imagine you are able to visit 10 session in 2 days:

Would you attend an XML 2.0 session?
Do you need an XML session for your daily work?

SQLCON 2005: Es spricht sich so langsam herum ...

Im September 2005 findet erstmals die Sql Server Konferenz SQLCON 2005 im Rahmen der Basta in Mainz statt. - Die Vorbereitungen laufen bereits auf Hochtouren. But it was too static and I couldn't switch the design easily. I switched to PHP, ASP.NET etc. writing a custom application supporting templates. But time went on and everybody supported RSS feeds, so I was looking for a weblog engine. First, I took the Movable Type which was very fine but it wasstill not my technology of choice. Then, I moved to dasBlog ... until this weekend.

The problem is that I don't need a weblog engine! What I really need is a small CMS -but- with a fat client interface please!

I remembered that Joel Spolsky is selling CityDesk (http://www.fogcreek.com/CityDesk/), a small but fine "offline" CMS. Moreover, there is a cost free Starter Edition for sites less than 50 files. Great, downloaded - here it is! It took about an hour to learn "all" the features. One of the greatest features is the multilingual support!

CityDesk really is a great tool!!

using (SqlConnection conn = MyDB.GetConnection()){
 ...Statements...
}

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/evaluation/betanominations.asp
