Filing for Non-Profit Status and Tax Exemption for the PDNUG

I have taken it upon myself to file articles of incorporation for a non-profit company for the Plano .NET Users Group.  I guess I didn't realize what I got myself into because it seems that there is quite a bit of red tape that I have to cut through to get things right.   We are in Texas, so I have to first file our articles of incorporation with the Secretery of State.  However, it's not that easy.  Within the articles of incorporation I must provide specific verbage in the “Purpose” section that the IRS will look at for tax-exemption status.  Then, I must file for Tax Exemption status with the IRS with a proposed 2 year budget and information on all of our officers after I successfully file with the State.  Butt-Whip == true! Dang! Not quite as easy as just filing as a business. I was under the impression that this was just a walk to the court house, fill out some papers, and off you went with your company name to file for a tax ID. Well I think this is the right route to take for a users group. Keep us posted as to how it turns out.
