Less Talk, More Rock

Avis Assist Sucks

So here's a littel rant.  After being told that I received a complimentary upgrade and giving up my choice bulkhead aisle seat, I was called back to the gate agent podium and told that someone with a higher status on the airline bumped my upgrade, and that I had lost my bulkhead aisle seat, and would have to sit in the rear of the plane (luckily, another aisle seat.)  And so it begins ...

The guy who sat next to me on the plane was one of those guys how had to use the bathroom every 20 minutes.  I swear, just as I got comfortable, he had to get up!  Ugh.

After almost 3 hours, I made it to DFW.  However, I was unaware that grabbing your luggage from the overhead bin and exiting the plane was such a long and arduous task!  I can't belive that people don't quite understand the idea that you just grab the luggage, and go.  I guess it might have something to do with the fact that these people try sooooo hard to squeeze their 22" "carry on" luggage into the overhead bins, they can't get it back out!  Anyways, after about 35 minutes, I was off the plane.

The next part of my adventure takes me to the Rental Car Express Bus, which is in no way "Express".  It took FOREVER for the bus to arrive.  Moreover, the bus made 5 stops before getting me to the rental car area.  There, thanks to Avis Preferred Service, I found my car, which had Avis Assist in it.  Avis Assist was advertised on the Avis Web site to be an easy to use and guaranteed.  However, it was not easy to use, and didn't work at all!

First, getting setup with the cell-phone-turned-Jave-enabled-GPS-device was rather klugy.  I had to talk with a person in order to get the address entered into the phone.  Then as I headed out of the rental car area, the unit directed me to a one-way road and told me to go right, which was in the wrong direction!  After re-calculating my route four times, I gave up and got directions from the hotel.

All-in-all, don't bother getting Avis Assist.  It does more harm than good.

Yeah, I've used Hertz before, but our firm has a corporate agreement with Avis :( I actually got the Pharos Bluetooth GPS unit for my Pocket PC - works awesome!

So you are definitely against AVIS assist? I have used Hertz before, and I really liked it. Now, I have a convention in San Diego, and plan on doing some driving. We have a discount code with AVIS, but reading your blog entry worries me. Think I'll go to Hertz again. What was your opinion of Hertz? I used in Los Angeles when I had 3 meetings, and I never got lost.

I'd definitely recommend using Hertz NeverLost as opposed to Avis Assist. As I had mentioned, our compnay also has a discount with Avis, but when I am traveling to a town I've never been to before, or I have a destination to which I have never been before in a city that I know, having NeverLost trumps the value of the discount.

Have fun in San Diego! If you are in downtown, I would recommend dining at Anthony's on the Harbor http://www.gofishanthonys.com/grottoabout.html.

Avis Assist SUCKS, and this is keeping my French for a later time!

They should be ashamed to provide this as a service, let alone request you to pay for it... It is mind-boggling even you give it as a complimentary service...

Avis Assist fails to find the direction you are traveling, takes about 3 "reroute" commands to get it right.

Avis Assist has outdated road information, it tells you to make a left where there is an elevated median.

Avis Assist looses connectivity, you get disconnected in the middle of Manhattan.

Avis Assist does not have a map, just points out the direction you need to go, and gives the mileage. If there are 4 exits close to each other, go figure...

I used Avis Assist in TN in the mountains and it worked just fine!  I had one area where it went dead in between the mountains, but it came right back shortly thereafter.  I would definitely use it again.

Scott,

I have this website that I use: www.avissux.com

I'm tracking how much corporations suck, by giving them a detraction score.

My goal is to raise attention to the guys that care within these corporations. So the more people participate and post, the higher the chance things will change.

If you have a minute, would appreciate if you could post and share your experience wih others,

Best

Harald

Yes, Im sorry to say that I have worked at Avis for over A year and it really needs improvement. I didnt like that most of the managers at different locations were gay men even at the corporate level and were very open about it. I worked about 30 feet from Hertz and I knew a few of the Hertz employees so I can safely say that Hertz is way better. Some of my coworkers treated customers very rudely on a daily basis and were never diciplined or dismissed. I am truly sorry for all of your bad experiences. I quit Avis and I will never work for them again.

I just rented from Avis at SJC and had a great experience.  Their new GPS unit was fantastic.  Almost a flat screen, easy to use and always correct directions, and I did a lot of driving in the Bay Area.  I also used it while walking in San Francisco, which was very helpful when trying to find a restaurant close to my customer's office.
