WSS SP2 and SharePoint Portal Server using .Net 2.0 and SQL Server 2005?

Bil Simser describes in this post that it is possible to use WSS SP2 with SharePoint Portal Server, although not all new features are supported in Portal Server.

Patrick Tisseghem says in a comment on this post that there will be no SP2 for SPS.

I’m wondering how you can get SharePoint Portal Server freshly installed on ASP.NET 2.0 and SQL Server 2005.

I think it will be something like:

  • Install Windows Server 2003
  • Install SQL Server 2000 + SP4
  • Install SharePoint Portal Server
  • Install WSS SP1
  • Install SPS SP1
  • Install the .Net Framework 2.0
  • Install WSS SP2
  • Upgrade SQL Server 2000 to SQL server 2005
  • Uninstall SQL Server 2000

Or is there a faster route?

  • Serge,

There absolutely, positively, totally, completely, and without any doubt WILL be an SP2 for SharePoint Portal Server. I can't give you any precise dates, but you can expect to see something very [very] soon. :)

  • Hmm.. interesting Ryan. I am pretty sure that there will be a SP2 but will it support ASP.NET 2.0? Actually, I should have better emphasized this. According to Fitz, MS will not bring SPS onto ASP.NET 2.0 before the next release. Can you confirm this?

  • How about a DUTCH Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Service Pack 2?

  • Serge & Patrick - SP2 for SPS will not provide ASP.NET 2.0 web parts to SPS... as far as I know that's the only thing that is different from WSS SP2.

Serge - I think your steps are making things more complicated then they should be. Can't you install SharePoint and not link into the database? For WSS/SPS, you're prompted to create a config before you start building your farm with sites & portals.

    Wouldn't this work?

    > Install Windows Server 2003

    > Install WSS

    > Install SPS

    > Install .NET Framework 2.0 (RTM)

    > Install WSS SP2 (as it includes all previous fixes & service packs)

    > Install SPS SP2 (as it includes all previous fixes & service packs)

    > Install SQL 2005 anywhere in the process

Then you can create your config DB's and such to create your farm. I don't see why you;d have to create a config DB before installing service packs.
