Where's Susan?

After a long break to deal with health issues (bleh, 25 years of my sleep-under-the-desk workstyle finally took a toll), I'm back in the saddle.  And working hard to learn a more sustainable work-life balance.  Wish me luck, hehe ;)

But where?  Well, I've joined Vertigo Software in Point Richmond, Ca. as a Senior Software Engineer.  The work is exciting and fulfilling (as it was at Microsoft), and the sunshine doesn't hurt either.  Best of all, however, is that my family is just a few minutes away and I walk to work.  Can't beat that!

My new business card:

Susan,

It is wonderful to hear you back and blogging. You were a great help while writing my ASP.NET book, and I have often enjoyed hearing you speak at conferences. I have had a lot of health issues (both my health - liver cancer survivor - and my kids) and so really understand the home/work balance can be a tricky thing (especially at Microsoft, I expect!).

Welcome back!

Hi, it was great to meet you at the PDC. I remember talking to you when you were discussing with Julia how to get a blog on dotNetweblogs so it is great to see you here. By the way clearly the new life balance is working as you looked much healthier than I remember at the last PDC. Clearly Microsoft is great place to work if you want to deliver products to millions of people but not a place where you able to have a balanced life. After working for over 5 years for big consulting companies I left to get my work life balance back. All work and no play makes for a soul destroying life. Also it takes it toll on relationships, I hated being away 5 days a week and never seeing my wife. It is so much better with my new job. Only 20 minutes to work by tram.

All the best in your new job.

Thanks Martin -- great seeing you again too. I know it's easy to blame Microsoft for my lack of balance, but I have to confess this has been my personal achilles heel for the past 25 years. I just really really love technology, and I tend to obsess over it. For me the lack of balance is self-inflicted. :p

Having been a Microsoft insider for a few years I have to tell you that I found average Microsoftie is much more balanced and "real" than the folks I met in the Silicon Valley during the dot-com gold rush. Balance can be achieved at Microsoft, just as lack of balance at many other companies (as you've experienced). I just need the remedial course :)

Hopefully your walk to work isn't gated by the opening time of the nearest coffee shop as it was in the past.

Welcome back, and let us all know how to fix our w/l balance...

Hehe, nope. But since the nueva cucina restaurant along the way (best breakfast burritos in the known universe) doesn't open till 8 am, I sometimes find myself engaged in random acts of housecleaning in the morning so that I don't turn up too early! :)

Hi Susan,

I always enjoyed your presentations and your posting on the newsgroups. They helped me a lot in my professional career. So are you still in a position where you get to work with .NET technologies or are you in a totally different field?

Wish you all the best at your new job.

Woo hoo! I'm sure you remember the look of disappointment on my face when I asked you where your blog was, and you said you didn't have one (or maybe not ;-). Anyway, I'm glad to see you blogging!

Hey Susan! I saw you briefly at the Smart Clients BOF (I was the RD that barely said nothing about Swing). It's great to see you back in action. As my mentor to ASP.NET (years ago now) and a frequent presenter myself, I have always been a big fan of your presentation style. Keep up the good work and the balance.

PD. We've got a couple of very smart female developers here (they are 33% of our brainforce), and pointing them to yet another great female blogger is a good thing so keep posting!

I hope you head up the next big thing, but get lots of people to do all the difficult work!
