I Evangelist..

Developing the Software Industry....

Developing the software industry in China.

Welcome to my blog section on the China Software Industry, and the personal project that I have decided to undertake.

I have been working in a leading systems integrator in China as both a GM and an Executive officer (CTO), apart from learning a lot about how to do business in China, I have also been saddened by the lack of evangelism in the software industry (well actually most IT industries, to be honest). Take for example Shanghai (where I am based at the moment) it has the best technology abvailable in the world at very affordable prices yet the experience of using all of this technology is not here. <at least not at the same level as Europe, US, Canada, etc..>

An example of this is the mobile phone industry, now I have not been to the states or europe recently but I pressume that most people still do not have colour mobile phones with video camera and mp3 playback, in Shanghai at the moment, it is hard to find people without these devices. <which of course means sms and smartphone applications are perfect for China :)>.

Now, I have been talking to Microsoft at various levels both in and out of China about the adoption of MS .NET Development technology, and my view that it has not been marketed or presented very well. In-fact it is no secret that I slated MS China for how the Shanghai TechED2004 was run, very dissapointing.

So at the moment, I am trying to do all I can for local MS Partners, MS and independent software companies in China. At almost no cost to them, since I am doing this for the love of the industry, and to share knowledge.

I look forward to comments, good and bad about what I am attempting to do ie: Developing the Chinese Software Industry. <yes I am MS focused initially. Since MS does have very good technology these days, but my mind is never closed to the other options.>

Hi Scott,

It's so interesting to read your blog and description about the current situation in China. I flied to Beijing attending the TechEd China this year, and ... well, it's quite success IMO (At least I can see lots of MS deveopers getting together in the event)

The activity of MS developers are quite active base on my observation. However, they're too MS-dependent and ... right, or I should say, MS can do much better (in the future) :)

Hi Colt,

Unfortunately I did not get time to goto the BJ event, my views are based on the Shanghai event, and yes content was good, but the venue and the actual seminar rooms, were for the most case badly laid out, it felt very rushed.. :(. I have been informed that the BJ event was a lot more organized. However things like projector cbles being pulled out when people leave seats, is a shame.

The demo area was very weak also... <the local suppliers, wher just standing around, and the only good demo was from states on TabletPC technology. That was fun.

Anyway, the software industry and seminars in general in the software industry are still in theier early days, in many ways it is not fair to critique too much.

And MS China, are very appreciative of feedback given both good and bad. and this can only make things better in the long run.

Either way, China's sofwtare industry needs promotiion, and as much help from people that are willing and experienced as possible. There is a lot of experience and knowledge sharing that has yet to go on.

Oh and I LOVE China :) one of the reasons I am here - 3 years and counting.

Oops almost forgot, it should be noted that MS is working very hard at supporting an immense industry and population, it is expected that some things will slip. The job they have here is very tough, I for one will do all I can to help them out.

Colt, where are you btw?

Something similar happened in BJ too, LOL.

Yes, I agree with you, and that's why I help the Chinese and INETA folks in setting up the first .NET User Group in BJ. China is growing. :)
