  • Why is Microsoft charging for Office 2007 Beta downloads?

A lot of people are up in arms about Microsoft's decision to charge for new Office 2007 beta downloads . Existing beta testers can download the upcoming refresh for free; this is simply for new users. Since the end of May, Beta 2 has been downloaded more than 3 million times...That's 500 percent...

  • The Broadcast Flag and TiVO

The EFF already defeated the Broadcast Flag once, but it's one of those things that Hollywood is not going to let go of. I noticed on Dave's site that DRM support was added to TiVO last year . This DRM allows content owners to specify how and whether TiVO users can record a flagged show: they either...

  • PodShow gets funding... but forgets to renew DNS?

Maybe that really was the last Gillmor Gang . My downloads of the latest show kept failing, and now I know why - PodShow.com expired on Oct 4th and is now parked. Ooops! I don't know what's more ironic - their domain expires and they forget to renew just after they get funding, or that GoDaddy sponsors...

  • Google bought the brand, not the technology

Scoble says Google bought YouTube because it "realized it couldn’t make its own video service look as cool as YouTube." As I said before, Google was buying YouTube's audience and/or employees, not the technology . After listening to the Google-YouTube conference call, it definitely sounds like Chad and...

  • Taxing Virtual Economies?

A congressional committee is exploring the idea of taxing in-game virtual economies . This is not a tax on the sale of video games themselves ( especially violent ones ), nor is it a tax on the sale of virtual assets in a real market like eBay. As Mike explains: Note that the politicians aren't talking...

  • The tradeoffs of the Energy Policy Act of 2005

As part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 that Congress passed last year, Daylight Savings Time will be extended by four weeks. One of the rationales behind DST is that we leverage the longer daylight hours in the summer months to minimize the need for artificial light. This operates off the assumption...

  • Arguing Intelligently about Copyright

Dare has a great rant on copyright . A key purpose of giving authors and other content creators exclusive rights to their intellectual property is to enable them to be rewarded financially from their works for some time before allowing these creations to become "owned" by society. This is supposed to...
