Out Of A Job

Well you guys, I never thought it would happen to me, but it did. Today, I was laid off! Man, this was a total shock, sort of. I knew the company was close to going under, but I thought I had a little more time. But I guess I was wrong.

Now what do I do? Reflect on what I have done? where I've been? I guess I need to get my resume in order. It's a weird feeling. I have not been in this position for a long time. Not really sure where to start. I have a lot of contacts out there but the way the technology market is and in my city, permanent jobs or even contract jobs are very hard to come by. I don't want to panic. I want to think about things logically and not make a rash decision. I have a family to think about so that will most definitely influence my decision.

Any thoughts out there? Any one willing to critique my resume? Tell me where I can improve? Any help at this point will be a bonus. Thanks!

Dude that sucks. But you can't dwell on it, gotta get out there and start looking. Where are you located by the way?

Keeping my head is something I intend to do. It was just a little shocking at first. I have spoken too many throughout the day and have received a lot of encouragement. I'll post the link to my resume sometime this weekend. I need some time to put all my thoughts together.

I am located in the Salt Lake City, Utah area by the way.
Thanks for all your help.

It's a stuffed industry. I know of many IT professionals with many decades experience looking for a challenging, rewarding career, like cab driving. Given that great 4GL tools have now largely been superseded by crappy assembler-level languages like .net and java (why write one command to populate a list box when a hundred will do), I'm thinking of joining them. Why stay in such a moronic industry?

Matt,

Not sure if you will ever be back by to read this, but I think I detect a little sarcasm in your post. Could it be true?

To respond, is it a stuffed industry. Mostly these days by people who have little or no skills.

But what ever. I love the .net environment. Who cares if there are a thousand ways to do things. I know that at least one of those thousand works.

Have a great day Matt.
