The June CTP of Atlas is out today. Mostly bugfixes, but the dynamic UpdatePanels are something that a lot of people have been waiting eagerly for. This means you can put UpdatePanels in templates and in WebParts, for example. Read the official announcement and then check out Nikhil's post where he explains a little more about what the UpdatePanel improvements are really all about. Then go download it ! Read More...
If you talk as much as I do, I guess it's a given that every once in a while you'll say something dumb. Here's one recent example from my life. I was in a meeting with about ten other Microsoft employees. I knew four of them already, and the others were introduced to me at the beginning of the meeting. I had to leave the meeting a little early to get to another building for my next meeting. At Microsoft, simply walking out of the room might actually be appropriate (Microsoft has a strange corporate culture), but I think good manners dictates that I excuse myself. I consider myself to be a polite person. I grew up with good role models in my family. (My sister has such strong politeness reflexes that she once bumped into the refrigerator in the...
Friends of Web Development Newsletter – June 2006 TechEd '06 TechEd '06 is now officially over and it was so great to see so many developers, ASPInsiders, MVPs and ASP.NET customers at the ASP.NET booth on the Expo/Learning Center floor. For those of you who couldn't attend, don't worry! There's a 'Virtual TechEd' site at http://virtualteched.com/default.aspx where you can view many of the breakout sessions that were recorded and view some other great videos and blogs that will get you as close to the TechEd experience as you can get. So what were some of the Web Development highlights of the conference? Here are just a few: The Microsoft.com operations team gave some very popular talks on how they manage IIS and ASP.NET in a large production...
The June Atlas CTP fixes some bugs, and adds support for dynamic UpdatePanels opening up scenarios such as UpdatePanels within data-bound controls or WebParts, and more importantly, custom control scenarios. This post demonstrates the control development usage. Read More...
Garbin has written a nice slider client control for Atlas and explains how he built it. Source code included. http://aspadvice.com/blogs/garbin/archive/2006/06/30/18988.aspx So who's volunteering to write the server control to render that? This new CTP is mainly bug fixes, but there are a few additions on UpdatePanel which should make your day if you've hit some of the caveats Matt and I talk about in our booklet on UpdatePanel . In previous CTPs, UpdatePanels had to be created very early in the page lifecycle so that they could participate in this lifecycle efficiently. This made it almost impossible under reasonable circumstances to dynamically create UpdatePanels . For example, most scenarios where an UpdatePanel was inside another control's template were failing. Well, now it works! Nikhil has an interesting post where he explains this change in great details, how it happened and a couple of interesting scenarios it opens up: http://www.nikhilk.net/Entry.aspx?id=134 We'll...

JD Meier from the Prescriptive Architecture Guidance Group (aka PAG) at Microsoft stopped by my office this morning to show me the new Guidance Explorer tool he has been working on. This is a cool WinForms client application that aggregates PAG guidance and suggestions, and allows you to search and sort across it. This makes it ideal for quickly reviewing checklists of suggestions for ASP.NET projects. Each guidance rule covers why it should be followed, and includes instructions on how to implement it. (Note: Click the screen-shots to enlage them) A nice feature the tool provides is the ability to create and save "custom views" of just the guidance you care about. For example, in the screen-shot below I created a new custom view called "Scott...
The webdevtools team has historically owned a control that shipped with IE5.5 and above. This control is the DHTML Editing Control. In order to improve security in IE7+, we took a hard look at this control and decided to remove it from Vista and IE7+. A post I made yesterday on the IE blog talks about this in detail. Please read it at http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/06/27/648850.aspx and let us know if you have any questions about this change. In particular I'd like to hear if you have an app that relies on this control and discuss your migration path with you. Thanks, -- Bash Read More...
