I can't wait for Mix to start... Friday we locked down all the bits we are giving out (and it is a LOT of them)... polished some very cool demos and got our hands on the final version of some other cool stuff. You could really feel the buzz growing over in building 42 and building 10! I am very excited about the talk I am giving... It will be a lot of fun and will cover a some great Silverlight media stuff, some new ASP.NET AJAX work and of course Expression and Visual Studio. If you are there, please come... If not, look for the demo and slides after the event. IIS 7.0 Beta3 Ships with a Go-Live License
This week we shipped IIS 7.0 Beta 3 as part of the Windows "Longhorn" Server release. IIS 7.0 is the biggest release of IIS in the history of the product, and brings with it major improvements to the Microsoft web-server stack. This article and this blog post list just a few of the major improvements it delivers. New IIS 7.0 Beta3 Features This week's IIS 7.0 Beta3 release introduces a bunch of new features and capabilities above and beyond what shipped in the IIS 7.0 release that came with Windows Vista. These include: Web Farm Shared Configuration : You can now configure your web-servers to be stateless, and centralize all configuration, code and content across web farms (making it much easier to scale out and manage). The .NET Show: ASP.NET AJAX Extensions
A while back Today Matt , Bertrand and I are film a .NET Show episode focusing on ASP.NET AJAX . The .NET Show: ASP.NET AJAX Extensions Several kind readers wrote in to suggest some "out-of-context words" for us to skillfully work into the conversation... I am happy to announce the final score.. Matt with a sly reference to "woo-hoo" got him on the board... Bertrand also seamlessly worked in "Transformers"... and finally, I am apparently all talk and no action as I got a big goose-egg! Congrats to Matt and Bertand! Read More...
Woohoo! I'm on TV!
The latest episode of the .NET show is all about ASP.NET Ajax. Brad and Matt first have a really interesting discussion of the history and architecture of ASP.NET Ajax and then you can see me demo-ing UpdatePanel, extenders and localization. Most of the demos are extracted from the short book Matt and I wrote on UpdatePanel . You can see that I was really nervous when I fail to remember the title of my own book... So the title is " ASP.NET Ajax UpdatePanel Control ". <g> Most of the code for the demos can be found here: http://examples.oreilly.com/atlasupc/ Check it out! http://msdn.microsoft.com/theshow/episode.aspx?xml=theshow/en/episode062/manifest.xml Can you spot the silly words we agreed to inject into the show? PrtSc now useless... or maybe not.
While looking for the character map in the accessory folder of Vista, I found a little gem that I just have to share. Vista now has a Snipping Tool that enables you to capture parts of the screen, highlight and draw on top of it and copy or save the results. Some would say it's about time and that there's about a million freewares that do this already, I'm just happy to have found it right there in Windows. It can even take non-rectangular snips: Now I can remove one more useless key from my keyboard. That will undoubtedly become one of my favorite blogging tools (with Windows Live Writer). The only problem I found with it is that it can't capture itself (which of course is a feature...) or anything that disappears when it loses focus (which...
Javascript Intellisense in Visual Studio "Orcas"
In February I did a blog post called My "First Look at Orcas" Presentation . It provided a good summary of some of the cool web development features coming with Visual Studio "Orcas". If you haven't had a chance to read it, I recommend checking it out here . One of the most highly anticipated features is the support for client Javascript Intellisense within Visual Studio "Orcas" (this feature also works in the free Visual Web Developer Express edition). If you have ever been frustrated by manually typing Javascript before, you are going to be in for a pleasant treat with "Orcas". Visual Studio now provides full Javascript Intellisense completion in .aspx files, .htm files, as well as in external .js files. It delivers Intellisense for vanilla...
Public Hotfix Patch for VS "Index was outside the bounds of the array" Publish Website Issue
Two weeks ago I posted about the availability of a public hotfix patch for some ASP.NET 2.0 compilation issues. You can read about this patch in my post here . In the comments of that post several people asked about an issue they've encountered with Visual Studio SP1 when they use the "Publish Website" command with a web project configured to use the built-in ASP.NET Development Web Server with a "/" as the virtual path (a cool technique that I previously posted a tip/trick about ). Specifically, people who have installed VS 2005 SP1 have reported encountering an "Index was outside the bounds of the array" error message during publishing: This bug was unfortunately a regression in VS 2005 SP1. The good news is that we have just posted a public...
