Microsoft .NET, along with XML, XSL, XSD, SQL and other cool stuff

Ack! Looks like the spiders have almost taken over

Cobwebs everywhere in here, anyone would think I haven't had time to post much!

Well, I'm still alive and busy as ever, deadlines coming out of my ears right now.

In that mythical thing called "spare time" I'm currently exploring the features of the Flash Player 6 on the Pocket PC, with the use of the Flash Remoting tools (the developer stuff, not the expensive server), I was able to bind the results of a SQLXML template to a listbox with only a couple of lines of code, unfortunately on my iPAQ 3850 it was slow as a dog trying to scroll a list of the Northwind Customers table (only 91 records).

These performance issues are disturbing, but it's probably just the overhead of using the nice little 'Recordset' object, I'll try using a simple array when I get a chance and see if that's faster, or perhaps change the logic of the ListBox component to be more optimised (although I'm using the PocketPC optimised one).

Once I've nailed down the performance issues, it will be time to try a .NET WebService, both consuming the data and posting to it.

With Flash MX's ability to store objects (including the XML object) into local storage (like cookies but better), this should open up a lot of opportunities for a sometimes-connected application.

I'm very keen to try creating a PocketPC version of "PeopleTime" (a timesheet app my employers have created) using Flash, but if it doesn't perform I may have to use .NET CompactFramework. I have no problems writing it using .NET CF but it would be cool to be able to do it with Flash, as the same app can be used on PocketPC, PC, Mac, Unix/Linux (I think they have a v6 player), and any other device that supports Flash Player 6.

Tim,

Sounds cool. Hopefully I'll revamp the webservice for PeopleTimeWS when I get back from Redmond to return an XmlElement rather than the whole freakin' DataSet :P

I've got my hands on that Palm (the XDA that was in the Office) so I'll be installing TaskVision on that too. Have you actually written a Palm app. yet?

Forgot to mention... I've got the MSPress book - "Building ASP.NET apps for Mobile Devices" here in the office if you want to take a look. I'll probably take it to the states with me.
