  • Relocating to another country -- The Plan

I blogged a few weeks back about wanting to move to another country and solicited some advice (I also posted to ASP.NET forums about this and got some good ideas, too).  First of all, thank you to those that support the idea ... either with advice, help, or just a pat on the back and a “go git 'em”.  I'm going to document my plan and what works and what doesn't here so that if anyone else wants to do this, they'll have a guide.

Here's the plan.  I leave for Seoul, South Korea in just over a week and I'm planning to be there for the summer.  While I'm there I'm going to (of course) study Korean until I'm at a level where I can communicate on a business level and try to meet people.  It turns out that there is a branch of the ACM in my neighborhood (Mokdong) so maybe I'll join that.  I'm going to network (I'm good at this, hopefully I'm just as good at it in Korea) and try to meet other programmers or anyone in the tech industry.

And of course I'm really going to enjoy myself there, too.  By no means is my trip going to be all business.

Either something will shake loose or it won't.  I'm hoping for the best, preparing for the worst, and expecting nothing.  If I decide to stay longer, I can always get a job teaching English.

Oh, and the whole time I'll be doing some freelance work for a company that I used to work for (I left on good terms, and when I need extra work I can usually turn to them and they're willing to throw some my way as they know that they can trust me to do good work for them).
