Windows on non-Wintel platforms - Desktop only

I just ran across this blog entry and had a "way-back" moment regarding the memories that it brought back.  http://weblog.infoworld.com/yager/2004/12/20.html#a44

See, I remember all the talk in the 1992-1995 timeframe where Windows was going to run on the 32 bit x86, Alpha, Mips, PowerPC, and one or two other CPU patforms, including, maybe, the AS400.  Well, the only cpu platforms that got significant support were the single and multi-processor 32 bit x86 CPUs as support for all the other CPUs fell by the wayside over the years.  Yes, I realize that the Intel IA64 processor currently has support, but I think that will fall by the wayside over the next few years unless the volume picks up.  I think the x64 market is where Windows is headed when it comes to 64 bit support.

Currently, there is support for .NET running on the 32 bit x86 platforms.  With Visual Studio .NET 2005, we will get support for two new CPU architectures: x64 (AMD64 and EMT64) and the IA64/Itanium architecture.
