Accessibility / Section 508 with AJAX/Atlas
When people talk about Accessibility, I think of Section 508 and allowing blind/disabled people to use an application. I put this small test of Atlas together for a blind friend of mine to test. It is at http://216.187.235.116/atlassection508test/. It seems that the applications runs find and he is able to see/hear the content using JAWS (www.freedomscientific.com). So, the question is, what's the cause of the accessibility discussion with Atlas? What are the issues? I hear discussion but not statement of the issues. Any information that you can provide would be appreciated.

Get column information from a DataTable with Atlas
Ok, assuming you have some datatable and you are using Atlas, you can get the datatype of your datacolumn object in Atlas. You can call the get_dataType() method on your datacolumn. Kinda cool. I've been trying to go over the Web.Data namespace recently in Atlas.

Please quit with the continual product pimping
I realize that some people here want to get a free copy of some stuff and pimp products. Heck, I do it at times and even get way off technical topics, but this continual repost of the exact same thing is annoying. I realize that the vendor wants you to put up a post on your blog, but geez, the same dry generic post that the vendor gives you is just a little bit too much. We had this problem about 12-18 months ago and it got ugly then. I would accept a product review. If you like the product say so. The same dry advert from the vendor should not be just blindy copied to your blog.

Read the Atlas Manual (RTAM)
I've been posting what I thought were dumb questions in the atlas forums. I thought this even though there is currently a real lack of documentation. Either last last night or early this morning, it hit me just open up the debug version of the AtlasRuntime.js file. I've learned a lot just opening up the js file. Read The Atlas Manual = RTAM. Its been very enlightening today.

Updating to the new December, 2005 Atlas TP
If you are updating from the October TP to the December TP of Atlas, you will want to make changes to your web.config file to get the stuff to work. I had a pretty generic web.config, so I was able to just copy stuff over. You may have a little bit more to do depending on the complexity of you web.config.

Calling Sequence in Atlas
I just tried something new in Atlas. Let's say that I want to specify a callback on completion and a callback on an exception on the server, but not a callback on a ServerTimeOut. Its as easy as I thought. This code seems to do it. Passing a null to the callback method parameter seems to work correctly. If you have an suggestions, let me know.

Atlas/AJAX Javascript proxy

The law of small numbers..........
Frans pointed out the article about percieved Java decline. Reading the article reminds me of the "Law of Small Numbers." In this law, percentage changes are skewed because of the size of the population. For example, and increase from 100 to 125 is only a 25% increase. An increase from 25 to 50 is a 100% increase, yet the same increase occurred in both situations. The 100% increase is somewhat misleading because the increase is based on a number that is one-fourth the size.

AJAX is a hard concept for web developers to "get"
One of the things that I am finding is that the vast majority of web developers don't "get" the concept of communicating with a web server outside of the traditional "round trip/postback." We have lived so long in communicating with the server in a roundtrip, that anything else is a really hard concept to get and seems to require a "rewiring of our brain cells (including mine)."

The CIA (or FBI, or somebody else) isn't really after you
If you have gotten the emails about the CIA (or other government organization) being after you because your ip address has been detected on illegal sites, just delete the email. Don't open the attached file or you will be infected. It is NOT from the CIA (or other government organization). Its just another social-engineering trick to try and get you to install a virus. I believe that this virus is referred to as "Sober X."

Textbox Autocomplete with Atlas/Ajax Parameter Names
I won't bore you with the complete Textbox Autocomplete example. One interesting thing that I found out thanks to Michael and Wilco is that the method that you call to get the autocomplete string array must have the parameter names as prefixText and count. If you don't do this, it doesn't work.

JSON and Why I am glad security is the way it is with Web Services in IE
As I am working on our "AJAX with ASP.NET" book, I have had this one nagging question "Why can't I make a request against a web service on another server?" I still don't have a specific answer, but as I have been reading and studying JSON, I am glad that this would cause a security violation. With JSON, the data is converted from string communication format to something that a program may use by using the Javascript eval() command. The Javascript eval() command executes all commands within the string object that is passed. Thats why I am glad that this is happening. If you are on a web site, then you implictly trust the site (obviously there are types of holes in that statement). To get what you want, you most likely want to use a JSON parser. A JSON parser will only recognize and process JSON text. Here is a JSON parser.

JSON
If you want to safely parse and transmit JSON, you need to use a JSON parser to transfer a text into a Javascript object. To go the other way from a Javascript object to a JSON string you will need to use a JSON stringifier. Be careful on using cyclic data structures, JSON stringifiers don't like them.

Sorry folks, but Open Office v2 really is that bad.
I do my best to never say anything negative on my blog about a specific product, but my pain and agony this morning with Open Office Version 2 has forced me to put that aside. Basically, its support for MS Office file formats is not greatly improved in this release, but is in much worse shape. It is horrible. This is a horrible product. I pulled in a very simple MS Word document. The document is all messed up. If I change things in OO, the changes are not reflected when I open the document back up in OO. I just want products that work. I don't want to fight religous wars. OO does not work for me. Given that I also write programming books, I won't be using OO there either.

AJAX with ASP.NET Book Status - November 14, 2005
I thought I would throw out a quick update regarding our book status. We are moving along. We have gotten the contracts in, but changes are still due there. I've gotten about 38 pages done so far. This material I have done so far has been primarily front matter, introduction, and XML coverage. I am probably about 3-4 days away from finishing the XML chapter, now I just need to get those 3-4 days. I figure that will come this weekend and next week. Once I get there, it will be on to coverage of Atlas. Paul tells me that he has done about the same amount of pages so far. Scott has been working on a new child which was born a few weeks ago (Scott 2.0) and getting his latest version of myKb out. I keep telling Scott that he needs to be working on an asynchronous client side diaper changer that works based on sensor input.

OnError - Catching an Exception in Atlas & Parameter List
When I first saw Atlas, the one thing that stuck out as missing was the inability to catch an Exception. I never saw an example on how to do it and when I asked about it, I didn't get any response. Needless to say, I was really excited when Craig Shoemaker, of the Polymorphic Podcast, told me last week in an email that the ability was in Atlas Quickstarts. Very nice in deedy. Uninstall a VSI File
If you want to uninstall a VSI file for Visual Studio .NET 2005, its kinda hard to figure out what is going on. I didn't find anyway any way in the Control Panel applet. I couldn't find it in the Visual Studio Directory. It was driving me up the wall. Well, it appears the files are stored in the "My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Templates\Project Templates" directory. Delete the file and its uninstalled. Life is better.

Do blogs have value?
So, there have been numerous posts regarding the value of blog's recently. My blog is worth $49K according to the recent service that was all the rage last week In looking at the list, I think I should be #12, but I'm glad to be 2 spots higher. This, and a couple of other happenings last week have convinced me that blog's have REAL value (sorry Sahil, they actually do). I'm not going to go into the specifics here, but check out the ASP.NET Podcast late this week for a full explanation of the value that blog's have.

Finally got to DC
Wow, what a trip to DC. I drive up to DC from TN on my trips. A bridge in TN over one of the rivers was down from two lanes to one lane. That was a few minutes of delay. I got to about mile marker 200 on I-81 in VA and sat for 2 hours and 20 minutes. There was a major accident about a mile ahead. The next slow up was about mile marker 43 on I-66 as I was headed into DC. I got delayed for 10-15 minutes due to another accident. As a result, I was much later getting in than I expected. I'm finally at the hotel, and tired..............

Used a Sql Server 2005 CTP? Having trouble running a backup? Volume Copy Service won't start? This is for you.
I was trying to get a backup of my system done so that I could reformat and install everything as clean as possible. The problem is that the windows backup wouldn't run. By googling, I was able to find the knowledge base article that solved the problem for me. Here it is: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=904801. Apparently, one of the Sql Server 2005 CTPs put one invalid entry into the registry. By deleting that entry, the Volume Copy Service would then start and the backup program would then run. And now, life is better.

Just wanted to say thanks to Scott @ ORCSWeb for getting the ASP.NET Podcast site started there. We were having some general downtime problems with our previous host, so I appreciate their getting us setup. It seems that our previous host was working on building up their network infrastructure. If you have several thousand listeners and are growing, downtime measured in the "hours per week" is not really a good idea. I believe that ORCSWeb will make us more successful than we could have been without them.

Turning on the network protocols with Sql Server 2005
When you change the network protocols, and other settings, you are using with Sql Server 2005, you might need to stop and restart the Sql Server 2005 Service. I find this a fairly simple thing to overlook when you have the really cool point and click interface.

Enable the CLR in Sql Server 2005 with Sql Server 2005 Surface Configuration Tool
I have been working with the Sql Server 2005 Beta(s) for a while (read almost 2 1/2 years). I've always enabled the CLR using the TSql commands. Well, I was going through the Sql Server Configuration tool and I found that this can be enabled through a point and click interface using the Sql Server Configration tool.

Intel has delayed by months the release of the next three major versions of the Itanium processor, a new blow for the processor family. But the chipmaker also plans a change it said will boost the performance of its more widely used Xeon line.
The next Itanium, a major revision code-named Montecito, recently had been scheduled for debut this year, holding volume production until the first quarter of 2006 so the chipmaker can address quality problems. Now, however, it will debut in mid-2006, spokeswoman Erica Fields said Monday. Its successor, "Montvale," was pushed from late 2006 to 2007, and the next major redesign, "Tukwila," was pushed from 2007 to 2008.

Wow, Texas is #1 - Week of October 24
Wow, I just sat down to watch ESPN SportsCenter. Texas has leapfrogged USC in the latest polls. Yes, thats right, Texas is ranked #1 in the BCS. While USC has won 29 games in a row. Honestly, USC has won at ND. Texas has beaten OSU in Columbus. Both were last second victories. At this point, it doesn't matter. The only thing that does matter is to be #1 or #2 in the final regular season poll. If both win out, they will be the final game.

AJAX with ASP.NET book status
Just a quick update. After having worked out of town in DC all most all summer, I viewed the ASPInsider Summit October 3-5 as the starting point of our AJAX with ASP.NET book. Well, I came back from the event sick. While I am still sick, we also have been discussing issues from the Summit regarding Atlas. It has only been since Friday that I have been able to get writing started. Since Saturday, I have put together thirteen pages of real material. I'll be covering the book status in a podcast later this week.

Buttons in AJAX
Ok, so Plip continues to have this seizure over AJAX. I thought he was going to have coronary over this on the last day at the ASPInsider Summit. To be honest, I really don't "get" what the issue is. This is old news, but I guess that he is upset because he was in diapers when these problems got solved. Web Applications have had issues with the Back Button and the Reload Button for years. If you have just completed a database operation and then hit Reload, you have most likely just performed that database operation again. Similar issues occur with the Back Button. There are ways around all of these issues, but developers need to handle the issues.

USC/ND or WVU/UL?
I don't have a dog in any of these fights, but today's college football was really exciting. USC 34 - ND 31 was unbelievable. On fourth down Matt Lienart thru a short pass that turned into a 63 yard play late in the game. With 7 seconds to go and the entire USC bench distracting the ND players with calls to down the ball, Matt Lienart scored on a 1 yard quarterback draw. USC won 34 to 31 over ND.

Buttons in AJAX
It just amazes me how people think that this breaking of the Back Button in an application that uses Ajax is somehow new. Well, this is not a new problem. Web based applications have had this problem for a long time. Yes, it sucks. Try to explain to users how the Back or Refresh Buttons really work and they get upset. I believe that there are two issues in solving the problem:

Atlas/AJAX with Firefox 1.07
FYI, I got the Firefox 1.07 browser calling my simple example code. It seems to run exactly as it is suppossed. FYI, this is the code running on x64.

FYI, I have gotten the Atlas code for the RC/RTM running on my x64 system with Win64 for x64 under IE. I checked and the Help->About shows that it is running 64bit version of IE.

The xml feed for the ASP.NET Podcast
Ok, how frustrating is this. We put up a really killer podcast interview with Shank and Nikhil on Friday afternoon, and then on Saturday the internet connection to my office goes down and has been down for almost 24 hours. I am not sure which is the worst, the problem on Friday with the download site or the connection to my office which has the xml feed. Sorry if there is a problem with the download folks, but this is the hand that i was dealt.

Single Engine Plane crash takes out the Internet Connection at my Office
According to our internet provider for our office, a single engine plane crash near Cookebille, TN, which has cut various utility lines, has knocked out our provider's pipes into our geographic area. Everything works fine here at home, but the office is down. Its amazing something that happens 80 miles away effects my office and how dramatic the effect is. I'm hoping that things will be back up by Monday, but I won't guarantee anything.

Paid off Plip

Oracle 10g Release 2 for Windows Install Note
For those of you that have ever tried to install Oracle and failed, I have shocking news for you regarding the install of Oracle 10g Release 2 for Windows. I downloaded it, installed it, and..........................it worked. I was able to bring up the web based management console, which I hated in 10g Release 1. I am very interested to take a look at 10g R2 for Windows because it has the support for the CLR in the Windows version of the database.

Back to fun stuff as oppossed to making money...........
As you may, or may not remember, I announced on my blog that Scott Cate, Paul Glavich, and I will be working on a book on Ajax in ASP.NET, with significant coverage of Atlas. Some of you have IM'd me asking what's going on with it. Well, I've been a little bit embarrassed to say that I haven't done anything due to a major project and trying to finish our ADO.NET book. Now, I can say that my writing part in the ADO.NET book (is a lead author ever done?) is completed and a major deliverable in my project will be deployed this weekend (are software projects ever done?). As a result, I can happily say that I am going to actually start doing some intro writing on Ajax. I should also have a couple of podcasts out this weekend for those of you that are subscribed to the ASP.NET Podcast. -
Do you have problems with SQL CLR Objects running under RC1?
This is just an FYI. I was having some weird problems trying to deploy some Sql CLR object into a Sql Server 2005 RC1. This was obviously a problem with my install as everything worked fine in a VPC image, but just would not work on my laptop. I thought to myself what could it be? I had some components that I had downloaded and installed for Visual Studio .NET 2005/Whidbey. I was also getting a startup error with VS.NET, so I figured that all of these problems were related. I uninstalled LINQ for VB and DevExpress Refactor for Beta2 and everything seems to be running correctly again. Happy Days are here again.

Followup on Atlas requiring Whidbey Beta2
Well, I was one of several people that diligently downloaded the Atlas bits and installed them onto my copy of the Release Candidate bits. I created a website project and.............watched it die horribly. The Atlas bits as of 9/13 don't work on the Whidbey RC bits. So, I went back to some of my backups of previous bits. Yes, a programmer that actually does backups. I spent some time last night going through my external drives and found a VPC with beta2 running on it. I transferred it back over to my local hard drive on my laptop and I was able to get things up and going. I wrote some example code last night and it worked. Sweet........

Passing multiple parameters through Atlas to a web service

Atlas bits require Beta2
According to RichE, you need to have the beta2 bits of Whidbey to run the current Atlas download. They will release an update for the RC/PDC bits, but today's bits require beta2..............Oh well, back to the VPC for me.

Of FireAnt and Kahuna
I've been trying to put the pieces together in my mind on what these products are. Kahuna is a beta version of hotmail (saying it that way probably does not do it justice). FireAnt is the underpinnings of Kahuna. It looks one of the big pieces of FireAnt is an Ajax-based user interface. If you have not read these, they are very interesting reads. My description is probably not 100% accurate, so please go read them as they provide a very interesting insight into product development and one of the drivers for Atlas.

What's up with podcast listeners this week? Download numbers are WAY UP.
Ok, something has happened this week. The number of listeners to the ASP.NET Podcast is WAY UP. This is good, but I am trying to figure out why. Overall, we have had about 20,000 downloads of several shows since Tuesday. Here are a couple of thoughts that have come up.

Thanks to the guys over at SPAMIS for sending me spam
The guys over at SPAMIS are just total spam sending creeps. Yes, creeps. I try to only say positive things on my blog, but this is just crazy. Not only are they sending out spam that complains about the Microsoft lawsuit with Google, they are masking the return address by putting the "To:" entry in the "From:", and the email header is reporting that the email is coming from Germany on a host with a dhcp connection which means that this may be some poor sap with malware on their system. Not being an expert in the spam business, I have no idea what info is correct and what info is incorrect. I do know this: SPAMIS == SCUMBAG.

Microsoft plans to announce Tuesday that it has purchased a small Internet calling start-up called Teleo, as part of a move to expand the capabilities of MSN Messenger.

Using the Log Parser in an ASP.NET Web Application
I needed to query some IIS log files last week. I wanted to break down some records into the request over a 24 hour period. I wrote the code below. The two special issues that I had to work through are separating out the hours through the Quantize command and then translating the resulting LogQueryRecordSet into a DataTable. Was HyperThreading Killed or did it serve any real value to begin with?
Having a BS & MS in Electrical Engineering, I was fascinated by the idea of HyperThreading. HyperThreading is a feature popularized by the Intel Pentium4 that allowed for unused portions of the CPU to be used in parallel with other portions. The net effect was that there appeared to be two CPUs to the operating system. While performance was not double (it would not double for 2 CPUs), there was about a 1.2-1.3x performance increase for most enviornments over a single CPU with no HyperThreading. Yes, there are benchmarks showing that are situations where HT provided no benefit.

Skype calls - Keep the versions upto date.
It seems that when I make Skype calls with people, that I have problems when the versions of Skype do not match up directly. I have had random problems when the versions have not matched up. I was interviewing Sahil Malik and we had problems until he updated to the latest version. Bob Beauchemin and I had a problem the other day. he updated to the latest versions and the problem seems to have gone away.

ASP.NET Podcast Show Frequency
When we started working on the ASP.NET Podcast, the general thinking was that we would tell everyone that it would be published irregularly but the goal was to publish every other week. How do you feel about this? We've been publishing about once a week here recenly. I've got the next two shows just about ready to go. They are a little bit shorter than usual, but I like the content and I think they work together pretty well. While I specifically don't want to step on Glav's toes and publish right on top of show #12, my question is how often would you be interested in listening?

MSMQ 3.0, which is available starting with Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP, introduces two new means of sending a certain message to multiple recipients. You can rely on IP multicasting if your network infrastructure supports this protocol and if you don't need specific delivery guarantees or transactional guarantees. When using IP multicasting to communicate with multiple recipients, each packet is sent via the network only once (no matter how many receivers) and placed in multiple queues on multiple machines on the receiver side. This implies, however, that there is no delivery or transactional guarantee—MSMQ IP multicast will not give you the possibility of determining whether a message has reached any of its intended recipients.

Finding Bugs in my code with And vs. AndAlso
Not trying to start a holy war over VB,C#, short-circuiting, and not short-circuiting, but I thought this was somewhat interesting. I have some VB.NET code that uses "AndAlso". I switched it to "And" due to some user requirements changing. Bang I found one interesting error when I am looping through the elements of a datagrid and using the FindControl() method to get the specific control. I had misspelled the control name. Yeah, Yeah, I know about having a test plan and all that. My point is that I had never thought of finding bugs as a possible reason to not short-circuit. In this case, the problem would have been found because the entire process would not have completed, but not quite as quickly.

Sometimes "The Student is the Master"
Borrowing (and paraphrasing) a line from Star Wars, sometimes "The Student is the Master." I have always tried to pay attention to how people will react in certain situations. I have worked and will work in a lot of corporate environments. I have a really good feel for how those people will react to things. My father has always been out on his own where he has been the top dog and has basically had underlings to him. It is interesting that over the last year, several situations came up where my analysis of the situation was much better than his. I'm not bragging, nor do I think he is somehow senile, just my analysis based on having a different perspective has more accurate than his..............Just something to think about as I work on finishing the ASP.NET Podcast Show #10.

Why do we fear the word "No"?
Well, I guess it is conditioned into us from being children. Somehow the word "no" is perceived as being bad and people fear hearing it and saying it. In fact, people will go out of their way to not say it. Its kind of strange. To be honest, I would prefer to hear the word no. I feel that it brings closure to so much. As long as we are not ugly about its usage, I think it is acceptable to say it.

HasChanges()/GetChanges() on a DataSet
If you use the .HasChanges() method of the DataSet, you need to be careful of one thing. I had placed the .Update() command for one of my tables before the call to .HasChanges(). So, the moral of the story is that you seem to need to check for changes before you perform the Update. On the surface, it would seem that this is different from the documentation regarding .HasChanges() in that the DataSet itself is not changed until the .AcceptChanges() method is called. On more examination, my situation was different. I needed to get some additional information from the system so I was querying the data after an insert/update to make sure that I had any calculated changes that those changes showed back up in my DataSet. This seems to override the change checking in HasChanges()/GetChanges(). Anyway, moving the insert/update till after the check for changes has resolved the problem.

Golf on Saturday July 30, 2005
Wow, today was a wild day on the golf course for me. I shot a 71 on a par 72 course. The course is 6,300 yard from the tees that we played from. The rating and slope are 68.7/110. That results in a handicap differential of 2.4 for that round, if I have my figures all straight and my terms correct. It was so rewarding, especially considering that I had shot an 88 on the same course from the same tees last Saturday. I was so upset when I got done last weekend. Today was definitely a different day.

Audio File Sizes in Audacity
I just started checking in my data folder at the ASP.NET Podcast Show #8 that I am putting together. When I save the files in then native format of Audacity, the file size is 533 megabytes. When I save it to an mp3 file, the file size is 15.4 megabytes. Wow, what a difference. Compression is good.

I have learned a new lesson in getting airline tickets
Wow, I learned a new lesson this morning regarding airline tickets. I don't fly much, except for going to Seattle, WA to Microsoft events at Redmond. I have typically gotten tickets about 10-14 days before. Well, I now have some time and I just looked this morning for tickets on October 2. Wow, the prices are one-third the price of my last ticket. I had previous flown on United because of the schedule and the fare was the least I could find coming out of Knoxville. I had checked United again and it was about the same as I had paid before. Well, I decided to check others this time. Wow, American is way less. I am going to check others airlines, but Wow.................................

My Journey to Ajax
Ok, so how did I get to Ajax. Well my journey really started before I saw Google Maps. In 2003, a guy named Anthony Mason showed me some code he wrote that used the client-side MSXML object from IE to make some calls to a web site without doing a full postback. The problem I saw at that time was the amount of javascript necessary to perform this operation and the time spent debugging. While debugging is still a fear of mine, I feel that the libraries, such as the Ajax Library for .NET, Sarissa, and others really take "most" of the debugging problems out of the loop. Like everyone else, I thought that the Google products were really cool. From there, things took off. However, I never forgot about Anthony's demo he showed me.

One really cool feature in the "Ajax Library for .NET"
Ok, Ajax is cool. Michael Schwartz's "Ajax Library for .NET" has a feature that is either new or I missed. My biggest complaint with regards to Ajax is that amount of javascript code that is necessary to write when interfacing to a method on the server and then iterating through return values and such.

I remember a number of years ago when I switched to using Goggle almost exclusively. I feel that away again as over the last couple of weeks, I have been using Technorati more and more. Very cool for looking at blog entries.

Popularity of Ajax
By looking at the stats on my blog, it seems that Ajax is a popular post topic. I am seeing 2-3 times the number of web visits to ajax oriented topics than I would see to other posts. It appears that there are a lot of people looking for Ajax information. As of mid afternoon, my book announcement had 4 times the number of web views that I expected. My posts about ajax that i did on Saturday night have had almost 200 web views and 700-825 aggregator views, which for me is amazing. I guess it really is a good time to work on an Ajax book.

IE6 Security Settings
I have an install of IE6, running on Win2k3. I am having a problem getting an application, which I did not write, to display the htc controls on the page. To get this to work properly, I had to add the site running the application to the Intranet/Trusted Sites list in IE6. Once I did that, all my problems went away.

Wow, I have been reading and learnng as much as I can about AJAX over the past several weeks. There are a few things that I think are really enabling the Rich Client experience.

What not to do with AJAX
One of the features of AJAX will be to "post" smaller data than a full HTML page. While XML is very verbose, it will be better than sending a full page and all of that overhead (Ex. ViewState in ASP.NET). I am fearful that with that, developers will take the opportunity to go back around to the server in a relatively small amount of time and use AJAX for everything. Now imagine that you are a public web site, you have a couple thousand users using a chat program built in ajax that sends data to the server every few seconds. Depending on network bandwidth and server CPUs, it may overload the web server. I don't see a "major" issue in going back and forth to the server on an intranet application, but I can see major issues when running a public web site and doing thousands (or more) AJAX calls over the public internet.

AJAX Lesson #2 - Javascript debugging
Lesson #2 that I have learned with Javascript is that you need to be able to debug your javascript. Get some good javascript debugging tools? Microsoft had the script debugger at one time. I never liked the Interdev or VS.NET javascript debugging, but I didn't work with them much. I believe that Netscape had a pretty good javascript debugging tool at one time. I'm going to go check the mozilla site for a javascript debugger. Can you recommend a javascript debugger?

My first HttpModule - written in Whidbey
I just wrote my first HttpModule. Admittedly, it doesn't do much, but I know that it works. All it does is get the IP host address of the remote client and put that into the Event Log. Admittedly, the Module does not do a lot, but it gets me started. The web.config of an asp.net application needs to have the entry below put into the httpModules section. The code for the module is below that.

Two women from Knoxville (where I live) injured in the London Bombing
Two Knoxville girls were aboard a train in London when it was bombed early this morning. Katie and Emily Benton were aboard a London Subway.One girl is presently in surgery the other girl's condition is not known. Knoxville Fellowship Church is asking for prayers for these two young victims and all involved. This comes after it was reported no Americans were injured.

Emily's feet were both badly injured and she is currently in surgery. Her sister, Katie, who was with her on the train, is presently unaccounted for. They volunteer in London for the Middle School Ministry through Fellowship Church. -

Its not very painful, but it is timeconsuming. Geez, can it just get here quick enough? At least I have the VB XML Comment generator.

Ajax Lesson #1
I've been working with Michael Schwartz's Ajax Library for .NET over the past couple of days. FYI, I got it setup and running with .NET 2.0.50215.312 build of .NET. Michael has a very clear and helpful 10 page word document that describes how to get things setup and going. The library makes it very simple and straight forward to make the calls and get results back.

iTunes makes us too popular?
I just checked out my server logs for the last couple of days. I see that there have been thousands of requests of the first four podcasts on Thursday 6/30 and Friday 7/1. Wow, this would appear to be good news. However, most of the requests are getting HTTP status 206. I looked this up and it would be an incomplete request. I figure that iTunes is trying to download and just retries on an error. I think this is the one of the same problems that Carl Franklin is reporting. Our problem is an overall lack of bandwidth into our office.

Why you should do database stuff in the database.
Today, I had a need to programmatically update data in one database from another database. I wrote a quick .NET app to pull the data out of one table, process the data, and put it into another table in another database table. I just went to write a quick utility because I was running in two databases. I didn't check the amount of data, but I saw that this was really slow. As the data ran through the triggers, it was way to slow. it was taking about 2 seconds for each record. It would have resulted in approximately 2 days of processing. Well, that was not acceptable. I pulled up my SQL Server Books Online and grabbed a couple of TSql commands. The resulting TSql command took 16 seconds to run. Moral of the story, if you can do it in the database, you should probably do it in the database.

Ok, so maybe Dell isn't so bad
Ok, so you might remember my horrific rant about dell last year. I had had a REALLY BAD experience with their support. Well, maybe dell isn't so bad. I dropped my inspiron laptop on Monday off my desk. It fell on to very thin carpet which merely covered concrete. It landed on a corner. The screen got knocked around. The spring that holds an item in one of the bays was broken. My laptop ran out of its 3 year warranty about a month ago. We put the screen back straight. I had to have a new spring for the bays ordered. Thats it. The guys that helped were shocked that the laptop was still in one piece. Maybe dell isn't so bad after all............

My Technical Editing is Complete
I just got done completing the Technical Editing portion of my chapters for our ADO.NET V2 book with the June CTP of Sql Server 2005 and the April CTP of Visual Studio 2005. I didn't find anything that was a big deal beyond the SQL CLR changes that were announced back in December, 2004. Besides making the necessary changes to my webforms pages, pretty much everything worked that I had already written. Too bad I can not say the same regarding my creative use of the English language.

Server Enumerator with Sql Server 2005
If you want to get the Server Enumeration working properly with Sql Server 2005, you will need to start the Sql Server Browser service on that machine. Otherwise, you don't get information back, such as the version number and other good pieces of information.

MARS should be turned off in your Connection String with Sql Server 2005
I've been doing a small amount of testing with the June CTP of Sql Server 2005 and ADO.NET V2. MARS is turned on by default in a SqlConnection. I would suggest turning MARS off, unless you need it. I am seeing a performance difference between having MARS turned on and off, just on regular ADO.NET commands.

According to the press release at http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2005/jun05/TechEd2005Day2PR.mspx, the Sql Server 2005 June CTP is publically available at http://www.microsoft.com/sql/downloads/. Unfortunately, as of 10:40 am US - Eastern Time (GMT - 5, I think), the link generates a 404 error. I'm sure it will be fixed, but ack....................

Installing Oracle DB and Tools
One of the interesting install problems that I have noted about installing Oracle's database and tools, such as OTN, is that the setup.exe program doesn't seem to do anything. I have found that you typically have to go into the install directory and run the setup program there for anything good to happen.

Signing an Assembly in Whidbey
I have been working on some components that require signing. One of the things that frustrated me back during .NET 1.x beta was that the option to automagically create a keyfile was removed after beta 2. The feedback that I heard was that security is important and the ability to just randomly create a keyfile was not good practice, therefore the ability to create the keyfile was removed. Well, I have been dinking back around with COM+ in Whidbey. With COM+, you have to create a keyfile. Well, the ability to create and use a key has been put back into the IDE as of Beta 2, which I think is great news. You select your project and then its properties. There is a tab label signing. With that, you can either create a new keyfile or use an exisiting one. One side genefit of this is that it appears there is no need to specify the assebly's keyfile in the attributes for the assembly. I think that this is an improvement as I always seemed to have problems with getting the directory correct in Everrett. -

Windows Service in Whidbey
I've finally gotten around to writing a Windows Service in Whidbey. I ran into one issue as I started this. I did not see away to actually specify and save the possible events, such as CanShutdown, CanPauseAndContinue, and such, until I added an App.config to my project. Once I added the App.Config, these settings were available in the property window of the Service file that is used to hold the event processing. I am not quite sure if this is a user problem or a design issue. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Debugging Tip for Windows Services in Whidbey
I wrote a simple Windows Service last night. I found something interesting when you debug and your service is running as a differnet user, which is the situation with most services. When you first get the list of processes that are currently running, you will see the vshost.exe executable for the service, but you can't select the executable. I fixed this by selecting the checkbox titled "Show Processes from all users." Once I selected the checkbox, I was able to see the exe, attach to the process, and debug as I had thought.

Explicit Transactions with System.Transactions and .EnlistTransaction() method
I've been trying to figure out how to explicitly set a transaction using System.Transactions. Apparently, there is a method on the Connection object called .EnlistTransaction() that does this. Now, I am complete.

System.Transactions
If you are in an existing transaction and within a Sql CLR Object, when you create a connection to a remote server, you will automagically be promoted to a distributed transaction and use the System.Transactions namespace. if you don't open a connection to a remote server, a distributed transaction is not created and you don't need to worry about its overhead. Much sweeter than the COM+ way of you either get a distributed transaction whether you need it or not.

Context Connection "limitation" of one
When you work with a Sql Server 2005 CLR object, you will undoubtably create a connection to the database that you are using. You will use the "Context Connection=true" setting in your SqlConnection object. I have inadvertently tried to create two "Context Connection" connection objects at the same time. You can't do this. You can only have one "context connection" sqlconnection object open at one time in a CLR Object.

Larkware language answers
First off, thanks to S.B. Chatterlee for the headsup regarding the languages people are primarily using for development. I am not quite sure how to read the numbers. I wonder if the VB6 and VB.NET numbers are exclusive of each other. Our language samples in our upcoming book are in VB.NET. Our downloads will be in VB.NET and C#, so I don't really consider this to be a huge issue. However, this will definitely the next set of code that I write.

DC Codecamp
Ok, I survived the DC Codecamp. I was up early on Saturday, I played golf (teed of at 6:15 am) and then went to the DC Codecamp in Reston. I got to meet Bill Ryan face-to-face. I listened to Julie Lerman talk about security and in another talk she did ADO.NET. I was sitting in the back basically having a panic attack as I am doing a talk at the Atlanta Codecamp on ADO.NET in Whidbey/Yukon. Her talk and my talk have very little in common. My talk is geared towards the new ADO.NET features provided by Yukon to the client and to the server.

Soundseeing at the DC Code Camp
I am in Washington, DC this weekend. I got an email from GAD, and I may go over to the DC Code Camp on Saturday afternoon. You use VB. You are jealous of the C# XML Comments in VB 2003. You can't wait to get them in VB with .NET 2.0. Well, you don't have to wait. Go get a copy of VB Commentor from GotDotNet.com. Create your comments by starting a line with the the three tick marks and away you go. When you are done, use NDOC or some other documentation generation tool and live is good.

Sql Server 2005 April CTP on Windows for x64
While I was home last weekend, I did get a chance to install Sql Server 2005 April CTP onto my Windows 2003 for x64 RTM install. It was very cool to see everything running. I did some simple stuff and everything just worked. I'm back out of town right now, so I'll mention more about this when I get a chance to play with it further.

I think I will look at the "using" keyword and syntax
I'll admit it. I have never liked the "using" keyword in C#. I prefered the try-catch-finally syntax. I felt that "using" masked what has happening behind the scenes and I felt it was undesirable. I still think it does. However, I just read Uncle Kirk's blog entry about the CLR team talk. I think I am going to look at this again with the CLR Profiler and see if there is a difference on some common operations that I perform. Results will be discussed later.

eWorld UI Controls
I've been working on a new project for about 2 1/2 months. I've been using the Calendar Popup from the eWorld UI control set. It is sweet. There is a really nice forum there. I've got to remember to post about a change I think that needs to be made to enhance the 508 capability of the Calendar Popup. Its a minor suggested change. This control is sweet (did I mention that already). Check out all the controls at eWorld.

Premature Optimization
A couple of weeks ago, I was sitting at lunch with a buddy of mine. He was talking about all of this complicated programmatic caching of data that one of his customers was doing. I remember stating that caching was only a good idea when there was a bottleneck. I decided to drop the conversation because we were headed in an awkward direction. You see, I have seen a lot of programmers try and implement caching because it is cool as oppossed to there being a real performance problem. Alex Lowe refers to this as "Premature Optimization." It reminded me of a situation I walked into a couple of years ago where a previous programmer was caching all kinds of data for this customer (different than previously mentioned). The application is just dog slow. I'm writing a new application for this customer (the one that has the slow application). This new application is truly fast. I remembered all this as I see that page refreshes occur in 1-2 seconds as oppossed to to 10-12 seconds on their other application.

Windows for x64 is officially released
Excellent. Windows for x64 is officially released. MSDN subscribers have had access to it for a while, but it is nice to see an official release. It will be really exciting when .NET 2.0, with its 64 bit support, is released later this year.

SqlDependency
I just checked the SqlDependency object in .NET Whidbey Beta 2. As I remember, in Beta 1, you had to iterate through the data that was returned. In Beta 2, I just tried it and you don't have to iterate through the rows that are returned (unless that is happening behind the scenes and I don't know it).

Dual Core CPUs start shipping
Forgot to post this, but hooray, several companies are shipping dual core CPUs from Intel. I saw an ad for Dell today in the Money section from one of their systems. Appartently, each core is hyper-threading enabled. I didn't see about whether they have support for the x64 instructions or not. AMD is expected to introduce multi-core CPUs in a few weeks. Wow, 2005 really is turning out to be the year for multi-core introductions. Now, where are the multi-core notebook CPUs with x64 support that only use a small amount of power?

1203 Error - No network provider error when installing the April CTP
I got the "1203 Error - No network provider accepted the given network path" error when I tried to install the April CTP of Sql Server 2005 onto a VPC. I fixed the problem by copying the install files into the VPC image and then from running the install program locally within the VPC.

Security Setting for your CLR Objects that use Datasets
If you have a CLR Object (most likely one that uses a Dataset, but I haven't checked out all possibilities) in Sql Server 2005 / Sql Express, you need to set the "Permission Level" to unsafe. If not, you will get an error that looks something like this when your CLR Object executes. BTW, I have already contacted someone I know in the ADO.NET Team who verified that this is a bug, repeated that this is a problem, and logged it.

Reference one control from another control while within a Repeater (or DataGrid)
I have a dropdownlist (aka drop down list) box within a repeater. When the index change event fires, I want to make some changes in another control. The problem in doing this was that I could not figure out how I could reference another control. Well, thanks to Scott Mitchell's articles on the datagrid, I was able to figure this out. First, all my repeater elements were editable, so everything was setup within an ItemTemplate column. This only caused me issues in my thinking about it, not in my doing. So, within my SelectedIndexChanged event, I have the following code:

Sunday was ugly - Louisville over Georgia Tech
When the NCAA basketball brackets were announced on 3/13, I saw this second round game as a problem. On sunday, my fears were realized as Louisville crushed my beloved Georgia Tech YellowJackets 76-54. This ended a season that four months ago looked so promising. A couple of injuries during the season limited several players and the result was a bad streak during the mid-season (4-5) and the resulting poor seeding in the tournament resulting in our playing Louisville, which ran right over us.

Two years ago today, ScottW set my blog up for me and I made my first post about the fact I was working on my Timesheet program. Inspite of the fact that one specific person (that I love to harassas) hates the fact I talk about non-technical things, I have enjoyed listing all the things that I am involved with. Visual Basic .NET <--> C#
I switch back and forth between Visual Basic and C#. Sometimes, the project changes, but I keep writing the same code. For some reason, I keep wanting to put the "static" keyword into my VB code. I should have been using "shared" in VB/NET. I couldn't figure out the error while I stared straight at the code for a few minutes. What stumps you in switching between the two languages?

I've been doing a lot of ASP.NET 1.1 work over the last couple of weeks and the key thing I have worked on is the datagrid/datalist/repeater controls. First off, I want to say thanks to Scott Mitchell of 4guysfromrolla.com. Scott has a great set of articles on the datagrid. I've been using article 17 regarding how to make the datagrid editable. It has been very instructive to me. I don't have everything completed quite yet, but what he has in his article so far has been very helpful to me.

Users Express Confidence in SQL Server 2005 Performance
Jim Holt, vice president of server development for Townsend Analytics Ltd., said that data rates are "extremely high" in the real-time electronic trading company's deployment of the database's Beta 2.
"[We're processing] 50,000 transactions per second," said Holt, in Chicago. "I've seen peaks of 100,000 messages per second."
That's a performance gain of about 20 percent over early, pre-Beta 2 builds of the product, Holt said, measured on high-end but still commodity hardware.

Create your own VB.COM - A suggestion to the MVPs that want their VB6 back
I have read this evening where a number of MVPs are signing a petition asking for Microsoft to add Classic VB back into the Visual Studio IDE. I would suggest that since they see a market for this, they can download the VSIP SDK and build an open source addin to Visual Studio so that they can have their own VB.COM.BTW, I love to program in VB. I think it is a great language. I write stuff in it today. I have been doing my demos in VB.NET. VB6 was a great language and environment. It still is. Applications run with it today. Given the choice, I just don't want to go back. And, I don't want the total confusion this would create. 2 VBs? No thanks.WallyPS. I wish I could take credit for the idea, but Paul Murphy came up with the idea in an IM conversation last night. Geez, I wish I was as smart as him. :-) -

Winforms change in February CTP
I just brought up a winforms app that I original wrote in beta 1 last summer and have migrated to various builds since then. The app is designed to show some new features of Sql Server 2005. When I loaded this app in the February CTP, I get a warning message stating that AutoScaleBaseSize() as System.Drawing.Size is obsolete.

Sql Express Manager runs under Windows for x64
Wow, this is so cool. The previous build didn't run under Windows for x64. There was no mention of a problem in the help file that I could fine. I just fired it up a few minutes ago on my x64 system, and bang, there it was. It came up and I was able to run some queries. Very nice.

Sql Server 2005 February CTP on x64
I just got done formatting and reinstalling Win64 for x64 onto my AMD64 system. Now that the operating system is up and running with no additional junk, it appears that Sql Server 2005 February CTP has gotten much further into the install process. I'll post more later, after the install is complete. I'm hoping to have some screen shots if everything goes well.

I have just done a very quick test and found that the CLR objects I had running in the December CTP seem to port over and run with not pain and agony in the February CTP of Sql Server 2005. It looks like the pain and agony will start with Beta 3, where things are destined to change................

Warning Messages with Sql Server CTP and 50110 when Debugging
I was just playing with the debugger in Visual Studio .NET February CTP release. After attaching to the Sql Server process, I set a breakpoint and I got this message. I don't remember seeing this warning message before. Wow, very nice. I find it interesting that people are surprised when the IIS stops responding when someone is attempting to debug within that process. To get this gentle reminder is nice.

ADO.NET Talk in Chattanooga - Will try to use the February CTP bits
I am doing an ADO.NET Talk in Chattanooga on March 8. I am going to try and get my code running in the February CTP of Sql Server and Visual Studio .NET. Unfortunately, this build does not have all the changes in the CLR objects. Those changes will be coming in the full Beta 3 of Sql Server 2005 in the spring.

I just checked and while the Sql Server February CTP and the Visual Studio .NET February CTP are not on MSDN for subscribers, at least I can't find them at this moment, the Visual Studio February CTP is on betaplace. I have just started downloading it my cable modem. I setup the Sql Server February CTP in a Virtual PC Session last night, so this will be the next step. I'm looking forward to seeing if any of my October/December code comes forward.

Have patience when installing the Sql Server 2005 CTP. I installed it into a VPC image and it was really slow, but it did finish. Its not too bad, just be patient, which is hard for someone like me.

Sql Server 2005 February CTP (but its March)
I just got an email stating that there is a new Sql Server 2005 CTP available. It is on betaplace and will be on MSDN real soon. Along with this build, there will be a new version of VS.NET specifically for the February Sql Server 2005 CTP. It looks like there is more 64bit stuff in this build (drool, drool) according to the documentation I read. The files are much bigger than they were on previous builds. More info coming.

64 bit Windows due in April
SAN FRANCISCO--Microsoft said it plans next month to offer long-awaited 64-bit versions of its Windows operating system.

Coach Dad finishes 4-4
We won our last game 33-25 to finish the year 4-4. We had two big surprises. One of our girls who has typically gotten about a basket a game got 10 points. Another girl got her first basket of the year. I think it was the first time in years that I jumped and got more than 6 inches off the ground. This same girl later got a free throw. The good news is we won to finish at 4-4.

Microsoft's x64 bit apps
It appears that MS is working hard on x64 versions of their applications. Obviously they are working on the x64 versions of the client and the server and are currently at the state of RC2. Along with the Operating Systems, they are working on Sql Server 2005, .NET Framework Whidbey, and other applications due to ship in 2005 according to this article. Intel is set to show dual-processor stuff
The Santa Clara, Calif.-based chipmaker will provide details about a host of processors at the three-day Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco. Queued Inserts with MySql using INSERT DELAYED
Have you ever wanted to just perform an operation with MySql and continue on? If so, you can queue inserts in MySql using the "INSERT DELAYED" command. INSERT DELAYED queues up a set of inserts and the inserts are written all at once. This makes the option good for logging. The inserts are queued in memory, so a failure in the MySql daemon will result in the lose of any unwritten inserts. A word of warning, INSERT DELAYED is not transactional

Error 1327 when attempting to install .NET 1.1 framework
If you get the Error 1327 with a message about an invalid drive, check to see if the drive is available and if you have access to the drive. If you can't find the drive through "My Computer," check to see what your "My Documents" folder is mapped to.

Been Pre-Occupied
Sorry that I have been away. I've just been really pre-occuppied. Its not every day that you are the lead story in the local newspaper and have been the lead story on two local TV news channels. WBIR's news story and WATE's news story. WATE's online story. After you read the online story and perhaps watch the local stories from the other links, you'll know why I haven't been posting much. This whole school board land issue has taken a lot of air out of my sails as far as posting tidbits of information.

Win64 for x64 Build 1433 (aka RC2) is installed
Last night, I installed the latest Win64 for x64 build onto my x64 system. Everything seems to be up and running just fine. I've only gotten one or two items installed onto it, nothing really exciting. As far as I can tell, build 1433 is running just fine.

Coach Dad falls to 2-2
Sorry for the delay between posts, and I know you are just dying because of it. Our second and third grade basketball team is 2-2 now. We won our first game 25-8. We won our second game 19-13. We lost our third game 26-23. We lost our fourth game 25-23. In game two, Kirsten had 8 points and Bradley had 3. In our third game, Bradley had 11 points and Kirsten had 2. In our fourth game, Kirsten had 9 and Bradley had 6. Kirsten played hurt through out much of the second half as she got hit in the mouth and her braces cut. her lip. I was very proud of all of our children. All of our team played hard. Our biggest weakness at this point is playing defense, so I am going to have our kids work on defense a little more at our next practice.

ADO.NET Whidbey User Group talk in Chattanooga, TN
On March 8, 2005, I will be speaking in Chattanooga, TN at the Chadnug User Group. The talk will be on ADO.NET in Whidbey/Yukon. I'll talk about enhancements to the client side SqlClient in ADO.NET and the opportunities opened up by the in-process data provider in Sql Server 2005. I've done this talk in Roanoke, VA and Charlotte, NC. Both times, the number of attendees was more than expected. I hope this one turns out well also. Finally, a good use for a dataset in a project that starts from scratch
Most of the recent projects that I have worked on have had fairly simple data shape requirements. What I mean by that is that the majority of the data tends to fit into a "row" of data. I've had some older (COM/Classic ADO) projects where the there was a lot of relationships, but nothing new where I can work a good dataset design into the system from the begining. Well, I am getting started on a new project. As I have read over the initial design documents, the term "dataset" has been screaming at me as this will be the first project that I will be able to design a dataset into with appropiate hierarchy from the begining.

Updating an ASP.NET 1.1 app to ASP.NET 2.0 Whidbey
This is just an FYI. I have taken a copy of a couple of existing ASP.NET 1.1 applications and updated them to ASP.NET 2.0 Whidbey. The applications were relatively simple applications without a lot of complex UI items. One of the applications was a mobile ASP.NET 1.1 application. The three applications updated without a hitch and even ran properly, as far as I could tell.

Debugging ASP.NET in Visual Studio 2005 Whidbey
I have been having this really weird problem when I try and debug this small ASP.NET application I have written in Visual Studio .NET 2005 Whidbey. Some of the ASP.NET pages will debug, some will not. I have been pulling my hairout trying to figure what was going on. It turns out that the pages I could not debug did not have their CodeFile and Inherits properties properly set in the ASP.NET page declaration. These pages were created in various builds of .NET Whidbey and had the ClassName property set.

Full-Text Catalogs in the master, model, or tempdb databases
In reading through the documentation on Sql Server 2005, it states that a full-text catalog can not be created in the master, model, or tempdb databases. The more interesting question to me is "Why would I want to do create a catalog in those databases?" I've always stayed out of those databases and I always thought it a good idea not to go changing things in them.

Data Type Suggestion in Sql Server 2005. Use varchar(max) and varbinary(max)
One of the interesting things that I am reading in the documentation for Sql Server 2005, is that the data types of text and image are going to be removed from a future version of Sql Server. The varchar(max) and varbinary(max) data types should be used instead. As I had some previous problems with the text data type with a CLR trigger, moving the column to a varchar(max) was fairly painless.

I think I have just about completed my outline for the Full-Text Search Chapter Outline is just about completed and I have written some content. I'll probably have a few changes to the outline, but I like where I am at now. I'm really excited about this. I can honestly see the finish line of this book now.

Excellent "Millionaire Question"
I was working out tonight and I saw one of the starter questions on "Who wants to be a Millionaire." The question was "Order the properties in the order that a player on Monopoly comes across" and lists out four properties. What about a more realistic question, like order the following four data access technologies in the order of their introduction. The first introduced would be list first, the second would be listed second, and so on. The options would be:

Detach and Attach Full-Text catalogs in Sql Server 2005 easily
Last year about this time, I was playing around with a web spider that I worked on. Still am, but its on the shelf right now while I work on real things. Anyway, one of my complaints about trying to do full-text search with Sql 2000 was that when I moved the database onto a new drive, I was still seeing utilization on my main drive. One of the cool features of Sql Server 2005 is that the database actually contains the contents of the full-text catalogs. The result is that I can attach and detach databases and catalogs and they move around together because the catalogs are included in the databases. This is sweet. Full-Text Indexing is becoming more and more a full fledged piece of the database.

Full-Text Index Incremental Population in Sql Server
If you want to perform an incremental population of a full-text index in Sql Server, you must have a column with the data type of timestamp in each table that you want to index. If you do not have a column of type timestamp, the incremental population will turn into a full population, which is much more resource intensive.

I just wanted to publically thank Dave Wanta for letting me know that one of my systems here in my office had been blacklisted about 3 years ago. He found the problem because an email I sent him earlier today was listed as SPAM. I thought I had taken care of the problem a while back, but obviously not. I've requested a check, so hopefully, the system will be removed from the blacklist relatively soon.

New System
I just got back to the office a little while ago with my latest system for my office. It is a P4 3.2 ghz, 2 gigs of ram, 250 gig sata hard drive, and some big ass video card. I am setting this system up now with Win2k3. I have another system just like this on order to be our new main server. I haven't bought much new equipment over the last 3 years for the office, besides my AMD64 system. I figure over the next 12 months, I'll buy 2 more system for general office work and a new laptop.

Full-Text Search limits
If you want to full-text index a table in a Sql Server 2005 database, there is an internal limit of 2,000,000,000 rows in a full-text catalog. If I remember correctly, this is the same limit in Sql Server 2000, and perhaps Sql Server 7, but I don't have one of those up and running to check.

Full-Text Search chapter
I finally set down today and started to outline my full-text search chapter. After I did a basic outline, I started writing. I am happy to say that I have filled up four pages today. I've been working on pulling together background material on how the full-text indexing works in Sql Server and reading through that over the past couple of days. I've used full-text search in Sql Server for several years, but I didn't know before the past couple of days what I know now. Wow, this is really useful and has at least doubled my knowledge of Full-Text indexing.

Coach Dad Wins One - Off Topic
My 2 children are playing basketball together on a team this year. Kirsten played last year and played really well last year (leading scorer on her team, if I remember correctly), but her team didn't win any games last year. As a result, we brought in a tough, hard nosed free agent from the playgrounds of Knoxville named Bradley (McClure). His job was to do the things necessary to insure one victory this year. He has completed his task as we won on Saturday 25-8. I have posted some video clips that show their stellar play.

Firewire drive on Win64 for x64 works!
This is very cool. I decided after checking out the USB drive this morning that I would check out my firewire drive this afternoon. I plugged the drive in, ran the "Disk Management" MMC snapin to assign a drive letter and there is was. That was such a cool thing. This worked on Win2k3 for x64 build 1289, aka RC1.

USB Memory Drive with Windows 2003 for x64
I just plugged my 128 meg USB drive into my AMD64 system running Windows 2003 for x64 (Win64 for x64) Release Candidate 1 (Build 1289). Low and behold, the drive was recognized and there were my files. Very Nice.

Have you gotten the error; "RemoteOperationException: ERROR: wrong password for user" with Oracle 10g? If so, it is probably because the OS user that you are trying to login to the Oracle Enterprise Manager with has not been setup to allow the user to logon as a "Batch Job." To resolve this issue:
