Yeh, this is pretty much my experience too.  In fact I just recently sent a whole bunch of lists to the "Digest Bin" :-)

I still remained to the boutique lists - such as Regex and architecture - but even they lack any real sense of interaction.

The moderation of lists is also a big hurt for me.
