Fighting unwanted e-mail (spam)

Microsoft just published some rules regarding figheting unwanted e-mail (spam):

Learn to hide your e-mail address from spammers.

  • Be careful about disclosing your e-mail address
  • Set up an e-mail address dedicated solely to Web transactions
  • Only share your primary e-mail address with people you know
  • Disguise (or "munge") your e-mail address
  • Watch out for checked boxes

Handling unwanted e-mail (spam)

  • Don't reply to e-mail asking for personal information
  • Don't buy anything from a spam mail
  • Never, ever contribute to a charity from spam mail.
  • Think twice before opening attachments, even if you know the sender.
  • Don't forward chain e-mail messages.
  • If you're using MSN Hotmail, report junk e-mail before you even open it.
  • Forward spam to the spammer's Internet Service Provider (ISP).
  • File a complaint with U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). (file your complaint.)
