Unable to install Visual Studio 2005 on Windows Vista

I've got a brand-spanking new, clean install of Vista on my laptop, and I'm trying to install Visual Studio 2005 on it. Unfortunately, I'm not getting very far. The installer always displays the following dialog, complaining that I don't have XP SP 2 installed:

The only related info I've found from Microsoft is on the VS2005 on Vista issue list, which states that "Visual Studio products fail to install in XP compatibility mode". However, I'm not selecting any compatibility mode when running the install. I've run the install as administrator, but no difference. I've tried disabling UAC, but no difference. Does anyone know how to get around this problem?

UPDATE - Although Scott Guthrie and crew graciously offered to help track down the problem, I haven't heard back from them after our initial exchange. However, based on other recommendations that I found online, I copied the DVD contents to my hard drive and successfully ran the install from there. My guess is that when the installer is run from the DVD it ends up running in XP compatibility mode - but I have no idea why.

  • If you can send me mail about this issue, I can put you in touch with someone who can help figure out what is going wrong.

    Thanks,

    Scott

  • Had you tried install in compatibility mode?

    For do that:

    1- Do right-click in the setup.exe.
    2- Go to Properties.
3- Do click in the second tab (I think that it's "Security" but I'm not sure.
4- Now you enable the Compatibily mode and select "Windows XP Service Pack 2".

I'd intalled Visual Studio without compatibility mode enabled and I hadn't any problem.

    Best regards.

Please send me a mail with the result: eugenio.estrada@vbprincipiantes.com

  • I just read Vista SP1 is out and it specifically addresses Visual Studio issues. I haven't tried it myself. My Vista machine arrives today. Good luck and let me know if it works.

  • Eugenio,
I haven't tried installing in compatibility mode because MS explicitly says that this is NOT supported.

  • Steve,
Installing SP1 requires installing the base Visual Studio product first. I can't even get that far.

  • What version of Vista are you running? I just tried installing VSTD on Vista Enterprise x64 and the product installation did not prompt for pre-requisites.

  • Valtcho,
    I'm running Vista Ultimate, 32-bit.

Obviously other people have been able to install succesfully, so I'm puzzled as to what's different about my setup.

  • Kevin, I just talked to a colleague on the VS setup team. VS2005 will not install if the compat mode is turned on. So could you go to the proprties section of setup.exe (as described above) and make sure that compat mode is turned off. The reason for this is that compat mode shims the APIs for OS detection but does not fake the registry keys that VS setup uses to detect the presence of SP2, hence setup thinks that it's running on XP but without sp2.

So can you try this and let me know how it goes?

  • Valtcho,
I checked that after I found the MSDN article. The compat mode checkbox is not checked. I'm installing from the DVD, so I don't know how it would have gotten set anyway.

Is there anything else that would trigger compat mode even if the checkbox isn't set?

  • i am unable to install Visual Studio 2005 on my laptop(LENOVO 3000N Series). I have XP service pack 2.my system meets all the hardware requirements.
    Please help me.

  • Interesting...i just went thru many headaches with vmware and gave up on them.

You should try VirtualBox at www.virtualbox.org

It runs faster than vmware and is opensource, aka Free!

  • It's a bit sample .Now, i know how to install VS on Vista Home. One thing , you don't need to select "compatibility mode - Run as XP services Park2" .You only change owner for setup.exe file and have to login with administrators or menber of group "Administrator" role .One thing more , remember that "run this program as Administrators" . Good luck !!!

  • When i run visual studio 2005 on window vista ultimate it will run but when start it show me that The IDE is not compatible but when i press run it will work good any ideas

  • waiting for the next release of Visual Studio, with vista compatibility...

  • You just not run the setup program in compatible mode when you select the property of the program.
I have met the same problem, but i solve it.
Maybe it's also ok for you.

  • Unable to install Visual Studio 2005 on Windows Vista

  • Don't install from the Autorun.
Browse the DVD and don't run Setup in the Root folder.
    Open the Setup Folder.
Right click on the setup.exe in this folder and choose run as administrator.

This worked for me on Vista Business.

  • I just bought a Toshiba Laptop PC with Visa Preinstalled. When I installed Visual Studio 2005, I got exactly the same problem as Kevin described in the very beginning in this page,
"The installer always displays the following dialog, complaining that I don't have XP SP 2 installed: ..."

What is the best solution to this problem?

  • I am getting the compatibility issues, and when I try to install sp1 for Vista, it comes back with a "Screw you buddy, VS is not in the proper place, so I can´t install your sp1...." and I haven´t changed any presets.

  • When i treied to install visual studion 2005 for xp sp2 i got error of missing .msm files on DVD.

  • I too have been thus far unable to install Visual Studio 2005. Brand-new HP Pavillion notebook. I run setup.exe as Administrator, I'm not using compatibility mode, and in my case the installer gets hung installing the components. Yes, I'm sure it's hung - I gave it 8 hours.

When I click Cancel, it says it will finish installing the component and then cancel. Which would be fine if it wasn't HUNG UP installing the component in the first place!! (What the heck good is "Cancel" if it won't cancel what it's doing??)

As an added bonus if I try to Cancel or close the installer, my system now will NOT Shutdown, Restart, or Log Off and I am even blocked from opening Task Manager unless it's already open. Ctrl-Alt-Del is even unresponsive. I've tried stopping all Services possible and killing all programs running in the background, but the only option at that point is to power off the system.

    Woo! Vista is great!

  • so what i gather from this is that noone was ever able to find out how to properly install any copy of VS on vista from any manufactor? cause thats great i have deadlines to meet and one computer to run it on.

  • I used to have the same problem as kevin, but now i solved it. I don't know if these steps r necessary but i'll tell u all the steps i made.

    I)From setup.exe (right click->prperties->compatibility mode-> Run as admin)

II)Then in Control Panel-> Programs & Features->( on the right of the screen)Turn Windows Features on or off-> IIS and .Net Framework

III) Actually i don't really know if the above steps r necessary, but this is the most important one.
Click on a Folder in the cd called Setup, in it there is a logo of vs.net and is called setup. Click on it and the setup will start without asking you in the middle to update SP2.

Good luck, hope it works with u.

  • Come down Phuc. You are not impolite. You are smart person but your mouth look like toilet.
If you don't like Vista buy window XP replace with your Vista. Hell phuc.

  • I just ran into the same problem trying to install Visual Studio on my Vista laptop. I followed the instructions above for setting the compatability mode. What I found is that I had to click the button on the compatability properties page "Show setting for all users" which also had the compatability set to run in Windows XP Service pack 2.... I unchecked this, and now the program is installing with no problems.... I hope this helps someone....

  • Fatman,

    Thanks for your help.
    I had the same problem.
It was solved by your post ...

    So thanks

  • Thank you FATMAN!. I just went through and unchecked every executable in the root folder and the setup folder of the compatibility mode setting for XP Service Pack and the 2005 compiler finally installed. I have to use VS2005 for our Framework compatibility with other developers. OK, on to the next problem.

  • is Vista the fture????

  • I know the feeling.... I had my visual studio 2005 on my computer but after a big problem I had to do a complete format and reinstall of vista ultimate. Now I am trying to redownload vs on my computer and it will start the process. after I put in my key it goes through the process but then as it gets to the end it sits there for 30 min and does not actually complete the download. I'm not getting any errors just not getting loaded. I am really getting ticked off with microsoft. They really SUCK!!!!

  • unable to install vs2005.pls help me out.

  • unable to install visual studio on windows xp error on setup.exe file

  • Oh, and you have to remember to copy both disks. When installing off the HD, it's not going to prompt you to switch disks; you'll just get an error message about a missing file.

  • Steve Arnott thanks so much i had the same problem followed you advise and know it is installing properly

  • I've had problems installing the program as well, and I tried everything I could find, but the real problem was closer than expected. It seems the software will NOT install, if windows update isn't up to date. Make sure you have all your updates before trying to install, doing this fixed the problem. Once windows update was finished, VB 2005 installed correctly. Hope this helps those who couldn't find the problem elsewhere.

  • pls help me for installing vs studio 2005
