February 20, 2003: Where to Begin?

After much deliberation, we've decided to begin the Libertymeter at a setting of 45, about halfway between total state control, and an ideally limited government (somewhere between 80 and 90).

What's coming up? The PATRIOT Act II will soon come down the legislative pike, in all its civil liberties-restricting Ashcroft-ness -- will likely push our needle leftward. Bush's bloated proposed budget could also push us stateward. On the other hand, the White House has also promised Social Security reform and a significant overhaul of the tax code this Congress -- potential nudges rightward. We'll see.
