WWMX project
I wonder if this team is not going to be the MIT of the 21st century.
The World-Wide Media eXchange (WWMX) is a centralized index of digital photos, where photos are tagged by the geographic location where they were shot. It's an experimental research project run by the Interactive Visual Media Group at Microsoft Research.
The project explores possibilities with digital photographs and geographic location. The location where a photo was taken often provides strong clues about its semantic content and also offers an intuitive way to index it, even among a very large collection.
Some of the questions we hope to answer include the following:
- How can photographers easily tag photos with location data?
- How can we design a user interface that allows easy browsing of millions of photos?
- Is there consumer interest in a database like the WWMX?
- Will people post their own photos to it?
- Are there commercial possibilities for a location-tagged photo database?
- What creative projects might be inspired with all those images?
- What sort of communities would evolve around a worldwide database of photos?
