Still More Work To Do
Here's another example of why developers are far from outliving their usefulness. An article on MSNBC describes a digital warfare system that the 4th ID uses to battle insurgents in Iraq. The quote that caught my attention:
However, some ground forces complain that the vehicle consoles are too complicated to use and frequently break down under desert wear and tear. Links between pieces of the network sometimes crash and, because the system is unique, replacement parts are slow to arrive. This just reinforces my earlier rant about a developer that thinks Longhorn will put him out of a job. Ludicrous. The military can't do their jobs because the system is hard to use... sounds like a job for Avalon. Links between parts of the network often crash... sounds like a job for Indigo. Parts are slow to arrive... well, developers can't solve EVERY problem, now can they?
Some soldiers are not using the system because of the problems, he said.
“These guys are busy. They don’t have time to troubleshoot a hard drive,” Saul said.
