Dumbfounded by dumb logic

Reading Paul's blog (as you do), I was amused to read about the conundrum faced by dumb people.  Did you know that "they" think that "you" are dumb!

Given that we work in an industry that craves smart people, you could imagine that we operate in an environment where the ratio of dumb:smart people is low.  I am, however, still sure that the value of "dumb" is still > 0 in any given workplace.

This becomes a real problem.  I might be smart, I might be dumb -- I have no way of knowing.  Therefore, it also follows that, if I'm dumb - and therefore viewing the world through dumb tainted glasses - that the "smart" people that I endeavour to surround myself with are also dumb.  This potentially means that, every single day I'm learning about new acts of dumbness and, I'm actually getting dumber.

I'm saddened by this sudden revelation :-(  This, being forced to acknowledge my own dumb predicament is a heavy load to bear.

  • ha! too funny.

The referenced article does focus on metacognition, though, and the fact that one has difficulty determining their own abilities. The likelyhood that you are surrounded by hordes of dumb people that also view you as intelligent is unlikely, though possible ;-)

  • I dunno if I'm smart or dumb - sometimes dumb sometimes smart?. Right now, I think I'm smartest when I recognize I'm dumb or feel dumb. I haven't a clue whether I'm surrounded by smart or dumb people, I'm dumb enough to think I'm smarter or is it the other way around? Like I said - I dunno ...
