Scoble & Tivo

Since Scoble's comments seem to be down for now, here's my response to “Why hasn't Tivo taken off“, which was actually an extension of Mark Canter's post

The single factor for me not purchasing a TIVO is the subscription model.  I despise things that a) track what I do and b) aren't mine when I buy them.  A simple solution for me? I bought the panasonic DMRE80H.  It's got an 80gb hard drive and DVD burner, with tivo features, except for the profiling and suggesting. (And I do find myself in the habit of trying to fast forward live tv because of it!) I love watching tv shows at 1.3x normal speed...

Just maybe, I should check my own net connection first before declaring someone else's site issues :)

  • boy if your criteria is correct, don't you have quite a problem with, say, Microsoft Office?

    heh.

  • I haven't had to pay a subscription fee for office yet (although I have heard rumors that this is the plan for the future). If you're referring to the upgrades as a subscription fee, I'd counter that older versions of the software still work as they do when they were purchased. Although, yes, if Office went subscription based, I'd be pretty disappointed...

  • Actually I wasn't referring to the subscription model, but to the license/activation model, which does fall into the "aren't mine when I buy them" box. Since I just upgraded to Office Pro to be able to play with xml and am now stuck with a copy of SBE I can't sell because of license/activation, and since I've been sorting out in the newsgroups some problems with a guy who, after signing up for "Customer Experience Improvement", is freaking because his computer keeps phoning home, I'm a little touchy about a) and b) above. I was joking, though!
