Safari on Windows - Browser testing just got a whole lot easier...

Funny, just last week I posted about using browsershots.org to see screenshots of your web application in a huge variety of browsers. Today, Apple announced Safari 3 runs on Windows.

Aside from screenshot services, there some other methods that pretty much worked in the past. The Swift browser runs on the open source WebKit layout engine which is also used by Safari, so at least theoretically you could get Sarari-esque browser running in Windows. Otherwise, you needed to be running a virtual machine (and potentially ignoring license restrictions) to test IE and Safari on the same machine.

Now if we could just test IE6 rendering on Vista without a VM...

  • Well all I can say is it's about time. I don't know how many times I have gotten a call by Mac using designers complaining about a rendering issue only to find out that it was Safari causing problems.

As much as I hate having Apple products installed on my machine, I think this will be handy to have around.

  • easier browser testing? call me a pessimist, but i reckon it means we've actually got one more browser we have to test on.

  • I'm worried Jon might be right. Hopefully there's nothing radicially different in the rendering engines between the Mac & PC versions, but every "cross platform" browser I've seen so far does have some differences between platforms.

  • Jon Rowett gave the exact answer I was thinking of. Yet another browser that's gonna give us some new compat problems. I bet it's gonna be like IE on a Mac... it's the same, but it's different.
