2007 is the year of Windows 2003 not Vista Server

Following the debate about IIS 7 on Vista and not for Windows 2003, yes I agree with Scott, it's a great thing to see Vista Server starting to be alive next year sometime around July.

But the point I make is that in 2007 a lot of companies will still be using Windows 2003. In Ireland (and we're not exactly a third-world country!) the second biggest bank in the country is still upgrading their systems to Windows...2000!

So I imagine they will consider Windows 2003 as a potential reliable system around maybe the end of next year. So Microsoft sshould continue to innovate, and this is good. But they have also to realise that their customers don't follow so quickly. As developer, I am still struggling with some applications some of my clients are running under Windows 98, in a couple of times Windows 95.

Windows 2000 is the real modern OS you find in a lot of financial institutions. But at least if Microsoft develop new tools like IIS 7 they should make them available for Windows 2003. If the marketing idea behind is to push everybody to jump on Vista Server, believe me it will fail.

  • Ever stopped to think that maybe they just can't backport IIS7 to Win2k3? Or if they did, that it would have to be dumbed down or stripped of certain features (which would mean more work for developers in the end) due to limitations of Win2k3?

I say leave it where it is now.

  • Some of your clients are still using Windows 98 and 95???

Even though Microsoft officially doesn't support these OS'es anymore? That is nuts.
