Another really unfortunate news coming from MS. Patents for accessing XML documents generated by Word?! Come on!!!!

Patents <> closed.

While I don't love software patents, some of the most "open" companies have tons of 'em. As long as they don't persue royaltees on those patents...

A lot of times it is defensive--preventing someone else from getting a patent for a function that already exists in your product and start charging you for it.

If you say so.... It's just strage that YOU have to come up and defend their position, instead of THEM. (the article says MS had no comments... suspicious).

If there's nothing wrong and nothing to hide, then why to hide?

The Man, I am sure is telling them to not talk about it in public forums like this one. The Man pays them, so they obey. Simple really.

Well, after Eolas case I don't see nothing wrong in defensive patenting. Somebody's gonna patent it anyway, so I prefer The Man.
