Domain Names, how much is too much?

I purchased 5 domain names yesterday a .com .net .org .us .biz, all for a planned release later this spring.

I had to get all the name servers setup, I use MyDomain.com for it's free nameservers. I counted all of the domains I have running through mydomain.com, I have 20, so I think all together I have 21 domain names that I own, as one domain actually has paid hosting through Interland.

I tend to buy domain names with high hopes, and then some get used for actual projects, others the projects never get started/completed, and then end up getting used for testing purposes for other projects. I am just glad I have a web server I maintain so that I can host all of these, else it could get really expensive really fast!

How much do you think is too much? How many domain names do you own?

  • I use 'GoDaddy' (how can one forget that name?) for my clients & myself. The price varies from $5-$10 based on duration (year) and type (.com, .us, .biz, .net, etc)

  • I haven't used anyone but GoDaddy for domain names for the past 3-4 years now, I think that's part of my problem, they are so cheap :) I was only going to buy the .com domain, but .biz and .us were 4.95 each, so I figured I may as well get .org and .net at the same time ;)

  • I use bulkregister. at 12.00 its not too bad.

BTW, do absolutely whatever you can not to work any more with interland. They are the worst company you could rely on for web hosting.

  • GoDaddy rules. I own about 45 names.

  • GoDaddy here too. I used to use Directnic.com but 15 seems way to expensive in comparison to Godaddy's 7.95 now. They rock.

Plus you get really good customer support and everything. Currently I have about 13 domains in Godaddy (i own five, plus the others are my customer's) and another 3 in directnic that are yet to expired, which i will transfer to GD when expiration is due soon.

Hey by the way Christoc, you host your domains in your own server....what OS do you use? Im about to get a DSL Connection (I have cable right now, and im switching to DSL because they give me a real IP, instead of my current cable company that uses NAT so i dont have a real ip) And im thinking of hosting my personal domains in my server.

Yet, i have no clue on how to do this. I'd be using Windows 2003. Any online guides, or anything like that, that i could read to get the hang of it?

  • I currently only have a Win2k3 server running. In the past I ran a Redhat server, but I decided I wanted to run a server using what I develop everyday, so my partner and I went with win2k3.

It's been a few months (6?) since I set it up, I honestly haven't had any problems with it at all. My partner has a few businesses he does work for, so we have the server sitting at one of those locations on a T1, supports all the traffic my sites bring in with no problem, and the client has never complained about it affecting their traffic in anyway.

The only thing about win2k3 to watch for is that a lot of things are disabled by default, for security reasons, you'll have to enable them. I honestly don't recall what all is disabled, but I am sure there are plenty of sites out there if you google IIS6 setup tips, or other variations of those search terms.

I did have problems setting up SMTP on the server, but that ended up being user error, and once I uninstalled/reinstalled SMTP it worked fine.

  • I found sitelutions.com for nameserver and it works decently well for free.

  • great tip about sitelutions.com

ill use it as soon as i get my server up and running.
