My Wix Journey - Day 1 @ 3:23pm EDT

I'm about to begin what I'll call the "Journey of WiX".  My intent is to chronicle my story during the next month. I will be converting a rather complicated InstallShield setup to a WiX based setup.  I'll share my trials and tribulations, along with my successes, for the next month of this project.

My goal is to write something on regular basis for the next thirty days, with each blog entry related to this project.

By the end of the month, we'll know if I succeeded, or not.

Let’s hope for success!

  • Jerry,

Funny you mention this I am getting ready to embark on the same journey! We have 8 different InstallShields for our applications for our group and I own them all because we only have one copy of InstallShield. My boss has given me the task of finding out if we should use the WebSetup project for Visual Studio 2003 (with custom actions and such) or to look into Wix and see if it can do what we want. This will be a great process because then every developer could then own their own install project. I am very excited about seeing your progress. I know alot about InstallShield, a little about Web Setup projects in VS 2003, and barely nothing about Wix.

My InstallShield: creates virtual directories, sets permissions for the NETWORK SERVICE account, installs a database, creates a user in that database according to entries taken from the InstallShield. Nothing too complicated but many different custom actions. I will be checking your blog daily!
