Making pretty UI as a break from real work

I don't know about you, but something I struggle with is long periods of time writing code that doesn't do anything for visual gratification. It's the part of some jobs that absolutely made me crazy, when there wasn't any UI ever because the code ran on some server talking to other servers. Blah! Boring!

I took a break this afternoon to start to pretty up the POP Forums v8 admin. This isn't even a fraction of what it's going to be (the navigation is incomplete), but it's a start. It just makes everything feel more "real" when you have something that looks nice and you can touch and feel. I'm a long way from getting this thing into usable shape, but having a little bit of UI makes you feel like you're at least accomplishing something, a feeling missing when you spend hours heads-down working.

  • Need help with the UI?

  • I find HTML is what really takes up my time. Formatting and making things look pretty, wow that's tedius work. Coding is straightforward and quick to me. Nevertheless, I do not neglect the fact that the page needs to be easy to use for the user. That requires visually pleasing and well-placed controls.
