Marc on Laszlo

"I agree that Laszlo is too dam slow - right now.  And they know that too.  But they'll be over a year ahead of Macromedia - once Royale ships next year.  And besides - Jeremy Allaire told me - that he sees Laszlo and Royale working together.   Hmmm - I wonder where the overlap is.....

For those of you who need some background - Laszlo is a kickass XML-native platform for deploying rich Internet applications that sits on top of Flash 5 or later - while Royale obstensibly appeared to be a Laszlo knockoff product - by Macromedia.  Both products target REAL programmers - by providing them with a 'compiler' for Flash.

But if Jeremy says they're not competative, then they aren't."

  • Jesse -- thanks for the notice. A couple of things:

    1. Laszlo can be used (and is now being used) with .NET as well as with server-side Java. You don't have to write any Java code to write a Laszlo app; it's all XML with embedded JavaScript/ECMAScript. Integration with ASP/IIS/.NET occurs via XML over HTTP. So, yes, Laszlo's server is *implemented* in Java, but Laszlo developers don't need to use Java.

    2. Regarding performance -- this is highly dependent on the actual application. I'd be interested to know what kind of application you're looking at implementing, and where do you see the performance shortcomings. Is it at startup/load time? Is it at runtime? I suggest that you give the Behr application a try (linked from our homepage) as well as the demos we've posted. Any/all input is appreciated.

    thanks,
