It Had To Happen Eventually...

It looks like your ordinary DVD player... but it is far from it:

“The KiSS DVD player (DP-500) takes the current form of video electronics to the next level of digital video. The first official DivX Certified DVD player on the market, the player enables easy playback of DivX video in your home theater system. Additional features include webradio, enabled streaming of DVD quality movies directly from the internet, and standard DivX (3.11, 4.x, 5.x), CD/MP3, Ogg Vorbis, SVCD, VCD, CD-RW, and DVD-RW compatibility.“
[DivX]

As any college student can tell you, DivX is primarily used for ripping DVDs and distributing them via Kazaa... (Some of you might be familiar with DivX players in their previous form, which were a complete flop. But, these DivX players have nothing in common with the old ones, other than the name). I don't really see much legal use for this (which is probably why none of the big guys are making these yet), but this little box's internet integration is very cool. Not only does it let you listen to web radio and stream movies live (admittedly, doing a google search for places that rent streaming DivX movies didn't turn up any useful results), but it also automatically updates its firmware via the internet connection, which means that you get new features / fixes as soon as they are available (perhaps, one day you will wake up and windows media support will be installed on your box as well).

  • You said <I>"I don't really see much legal use for this"</I>

That's the same arguement Sony tried when they tried to make VCR use illegal. It didn't work, did it? And are VCRs used today for much besides fair use?

The fact is that this is a pivotol time for the media and content industries, and they are fighting the paradigm shift the entire way, trying to hang on to their old guard way of making money.

Well, markets change, and the adaptable survive, and the dinosaurs die. Whomever can discover the best way to market and distribute media over the next generation will become very, very rich.

  • Yeah what about websites like www.dirtyrentals.com? its the same idea pretty much. Its a shame people suck so badly that they think they can keep things the old fashion way! this is the time for the internet and hollywood better see it coming!
