Never Say Never

"They'll never be able to replicate Google's functionality...never. Google's got way too much of a headstart and their sole focus is on search technology. They are the experts."
[David Stone]

But Microsoft has tons more cash and spends tons more on research. MS also has a lot more invested in NLP, which is going to lead eventually lead to "smarter" search engines. Microsoft isn't in the business of cloning software, they are in the business of making a better version of your products. So, if MS makes it a priority, it will happen. Probably not next week, and maybe not next year, but one morning you will wake up with a press release on your desk about such and such product from MS that completely transforms your product space (just ask Sun)... MS isn't a startup anymore, they do long term stuff now :-).

  • That's true...I shouldn't say never. But I will say that it's going to be really hard to implement what Google has accomplished. And unless Microsoft's product is significantly better, I'll still use Google till the end.

  • Google reminds me of Adobe: they have a good mix of computer scientists and energetic engineers. If they keep moving forward and don't lose their way they could own the space for a decade or more despite anything MS could do (like Adobe with Photoshop).
