ASAP: The "Breeze Killer"?

Jeremy Allaire thinks he's found a “Breeze Killer.” The app, ASAP by Convoq (which Jeremy just happens to be an investor in and board member of), is actually pretty cool. Integrated video, voice, IM, presentation sharing, etc. He says that it makes “first generation products” like Placeware and WebEx feel awkward, but I have to disagree. Although this is a very cool application, it suffers from the same design flaw that Lazslo does, it is built on top of Flash. This means that, although the UI is very slick, it is extremely unresponsive compared to a standard desktop app, and it sucks up your CPU cycles like mad. Just try doing some screen sharing and you will notice that not only does your CPU utilization go through the roof, but the video is like 8 seconds off, even on DSL.

Another issue raised is security, which is quite an interesting topic. Flash doesn't have a nice CryptoAPI like Windows, so it would be interesting to see how they are handling this. Due to the slow speed of actionscript, you can't exactly secure large amounts of data with it either (imagine implementing SSL in javascript... it is slow enough when it is written in a compiled language), so unless you are going to do strictly HTTPS transfers for all data, you are out of luck (maybe that explains the slowness and high CPU usage?).

In any case, nice try, but I think I'll stick with Placeware and Windows Messenger. Maybe this app is a Breeze Killer, but then again, no one uses Breeze, so lets try killing some of the big guys instead.

  • Maybe I could make a browser and call it the "Mosaic-killer"! :)

  • Wow. So much fud, so little time.

    Regardless,

I was also checking this out last night, and did not have the responsive ness and CPI issues you desscribed (im on a 1.25 ghz mac).

Maybe you should complain to your DSL provider, as I was using this last had had virtually no delay or lag with the audio / video.

Why would you implement SSL in JavaScript, when Flash has support for SSL (via the browser when running in the browser, or native when running in standalone mode)? While I am not sure if the ASAP app is using SSL, it would require NO additional actionscript code to support it. Well, one, you would have to change:

???? I am curious where you get your marketing / usage data from? Breeze has been doing very well.

As far as using Windows Messaging, how well does that run for you on OSX? or Linux? or Solaris? etc... How easy is it to extend?

  • Yeah, interesting app.

On a slight tangent, I've never really, personally, sold into this model that Macromedia seems to be taking Flash to be more developer-centric.

I've never looked at Flash as more then a nice design tool. But, with the latest versions they've included more and more robust support for scripting and automation. I think it's a great product, but to me that is heading towards a skillset that isn't very common - you have to have this mix of developer and designer. And, I just don't see that very often.

Anyways, I digress. Great post, Jesse.

  • Hey folks, great posts.

I am contracted by a client to build a portal and a community site for their school. He wants me to add breeze-like functionality to it but he doesn't want to dish out too much money. I'm also not to hip on integrating web-ex or other hosted/expensive products to this portal.

I wanted to know if any of you know of a open source or lite and inexpensive version of breeze like tools out there.

If you do please feel free to email me at harouthk@hotmail.com
