Flash Lite on Windows Mobile

Lots of people are pointing to the release of Flash "Light" on Windows Mobile by Microsoft and claiming that this is to "hold people over" until Silverlight gets here. That is just utter BS. Who the hell has ever used a Flash Light site on their phone? Hell, who really uses Windows Mobile to do any web surfing? Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever used a Flash "Light" site. Ever. From ANY device. This is certainly not something that is happening because users are demanding it and it sure isn't going to sell any more phones. More likely, this is a reflection of two things. First, Microsoft under Ozzie is making it a higher priority to support other people's products. Second, this could help limit the chances of another lawsuit over in EU land should Silverlight get big. By providing support for Flash "Light" well ahead of the Silverlight for mobile release, Microsoft is showing that it wants to win this fight fair and square.

  • Jesse, a couple things, first of all Flash Lite is not for web browsing, it is a flash/flex based application deployment plugin, not a web flash plugin. There is already a flash player plugin available for PIE and other mobile browsers. Flash Lite is used for games, applications, etc. that run on the phone, not within the web browser. Secondly, there are a LOT of people that do significant web browsing on their mobile handsets.

Flash Lite is already available for WinMo, and it's not difficult to set up. Microsoft is actually licensing Flash Lite so that it is distributed by default with new versions of Windows Mobile, this is a very different situation than simply "providing support" to avoid a lawsuit. Since when has Microsoft cared about avoiding a lawsuit? Don't they usually just fight them, and then delay payments for years on the ones they lose?

  • LOL... just because you never use Windows Mobile doesn't mean no one else does either.

I work in the field of Marketing, so i'm always out and about. Windows Mobile suits me best, and I need Internet on the move pretty much all the time. Im sure you work either from home or office, and wouldnt really have a need of surfing the web using windows mobile. Stop being so bloody self-centered... there are lots of people out there who do use it constantly.
