Is Oracle about to get Netscaped?

"Microsoft's tactics in the sector -- enter with low-price, "good enough" technology and nibble away market share from entrenched rivals slowly but surely -- sound familiar to anyone who followed the browser battles of the late 1990s. So, is Oracle in danger of getting Netscaped?"

  • There are key differences here:

    1. It is difficult to compare typical consumer behaviors to those of business and enterprise customers;

    2. Many of the browser users never had to proactively install a browser- with IE it was just there and they used it. With database platforms that dynamic isn't in play;

    3. Users of Oracle have made a SIGNIFICANT investment in the platform. The cost of migrating from SQL Server to Oracle are much more than just upgrading the database platform for most users.

    Still, I think that Oracle is fading significantly.
