Why You Should Dump Internet Explorer

Daniel Miessler post is surely controversial but I think he has some valid points.

Extract:

The time has come to dump Internet Explorer. I know, I know — you may have heard the same thing before from those that think it’s cool to hate Microsoft; but I’m not one of those guys. I’m actually an MCSE and I happen to like quite a few of Microsoft’s products. Rather than lump me into the Microsoft-basher category, consider for a moment why you use the browser you use, and humor me by entertaining the notion — if even for a second — that switching to another might be worth your while.

My argument is simple: the benefits of using IE are too few - and the faults too great — to put off the adoption of an alternative any longer.

UPDATE: Well the Firefox experience is not a success for me at the moment. Installed on three machines, and I exoperience some crashes randomly on different websites, including Firefox site. The problem is the crash is not really 'clean' and let a lot of unclosed process. Some good job but more to come for you Firefox guys !

  • It doesn't crash here. (0.9).

I had some problems making it the default browser, like clicking a link in outlook would open firefox instead of IE. Turned out Firefox didn't register itself correctly in the filetypes. Remove the '%1' in teh DDE textbox for the HTTP filetype.

  • try mozilla. firefox is only at 0.9. mozilla is now at 1.7. mozilla is more stable; firefox is meant to be the next generation browser, and as such, is not at a major point release as of yet.

  • I am using MyIE and yes it's really great.

    Thansk for the info anyway

  • I tried FireFox but couldn't tolerate it. It seemed to run TOO SLOW! I have no facts or figures but it was slower than IE. When I surf, I want speed. Besides, most of the features from FireFox can be added to IE as add-ins.

  • Paschal, what processes were left running after the crash?

  • I try every new browser that comes along. I have no religious feeling for or against - but at the moment I use IE because nothing even come close to it. When it comes down to it, I need a page to come up quickly, cleanly and reliably, and at the moment IE does that far far better than any of the alternatives.

Hopefully in the future that will change - I miss the browser wars but for now in my mind, it has no competition.

  • Have those of you complaining about firefox not performing as fast as IE tried a recent build? I think it's pretty universally accepted that firefox is one of the fastest browsers out there, if not the fastest in terms of rendering. The recent builds have even shaved a few seconds off of the initial start up time, which is the only way IE was ever faster. With .8 and .9 I've pretty much switched over to firefox as my default browser. It just plain works better these days.

IE has a lot of catching up to do.

  • Well, I've only jumped on board as of v0.9.2 but when I did, I was pretty impressed with it. I've tried other browsers in the past, but being set in my ways with IE, it always made the transition difficult. Firefox has done the right thing by keeping defaults in line with IE (simple things like Shift-Click to open in new window. Would be good to have included F6 to focus on address bar as I've grown accustomed to using that also)

Regarding IE, security concerns aside, my biggest problem with it is it being so forgiving on the standards.. pages that shouldn't render correctly, but do on IE, makes for sloppy coders (those that don't test outside of IE anyways).
