Internet Explorer wake up or die

Strong title but just to say what everybody knows, IE is dying slowly but surely.

I manage different sites and clearly the stats show a strong decline for IE in browser usage. The winner is Firefox as you can expect.
In  some stats I get now 18% of Mozilla users.
So IE developers waht are you waiting for ? I like IE and I dislike Firefox, but hey if everybody use the latest I will have to follow.

Sad.

  • Competition is good, without competition you see what happened to Internet Explorer. No innovation!!!

Explain why you dislike Firefox, cause the browser experience is simply better with Firefox. It's like Internet Explorer with a lot more features.

  • I suspect that "updated" browser would be Avalon but IE is still more functional I must say.Sorry folks,IE was first used for not directly browser/inet related tasks-it's application development platform not simply browser,so why everyone compare it with browser?

  • Yes, even i have observed the same, but what I feel is most of the downloads for FireFox is mainly from developer community only, I can still see lot of blank faces when I talk about firefox around :-)

Well, FF needs lot of maturity and power to compete with IE for sure. Still it has to face the malware, spyware alliance right?

  • Personally I haven't used IE as my main browser for about 6 months. I have never had a single problem with malware - the typical security fix in Firefox takes a matter of hours - and since it has less dependencies / integration in the host OS these security problems tend to have less of an impact.

Andrey's point about IE being used to host applications - well, that's a lot of the problem, of course a lot of the security issues over IEs lifetime have been to do with this 'app hosting' functionality. Firefox is tremendously powerful , XUL and the declarative nature of it's interface enable easy app development without the implicit possibility of interacting with the host app. IE took over from Netscape, Netscape took over from NCSA mosaic, maybe it's just time to let IE go - I don't think this is a bad thing for Microsoft, IE isn't exactly a profit centre and with ClickOnce they have a far better model for securely distributing Thin-client (or Smart Client) applications without compromising the core story for IE (just browsing websites). My preference for the way forward would be for some sort of happy medium - hey Mozilla is open-source, maybe some folks from Microsofgt could join up :-)

  • Statistics rule #1 : don't overstate statements resulting from deciphering your little tiny minusculous almost ridiculous sample of data.

In other words, your audience is 100% developers. Do you expect 99.9% of people connecting the net are as savvy as developers? After all, 6 million Firefox downloads in 3 weeks is just a little tiny minusculous almost ridiculous sample, too.

  • Don't be a naysayer Stephane! In a years time everyone will be using Firefox. And we'll all be using Linux desktops by then too, because MS are taking so long with Longhorn!

You might disagree, but slashdot says I'm right.
