.Net 2.0 Yes VS 2005 No

I heard about issues regarding Visual Studio 2005 IDE and I was thinking yes surely problems but maybe not that bad.

After spending 4 or 5 hours on a converted web project, yes I confirm the IDE suck. Different things happened like the lost of all templates when you want to add a new page and no way to find what is the culprit, and 5 or 6 times the tool just quit by itself, no explanations whatsoever :-(

Sorry I don't have the luxury and the time to rebuild my machine just to see, and VS 2003 works fine anyway.

So the question remains, is Microsoft is really at developing an IDE or maybe they should buy Macromedia and Dreamweaver (they seemed to know their job well about visual designer) ?

So for me VS 2005 not a chance to use it on my current projects, no time for playing, but of course I will still promote it for new projects, the new framework seems to work fine.

UPDATE: Thanks to all the suggestions. No I don't have any Beta component ever installed on this machine. Yes the unexpected application shutdown is totally random, no specific pattern.

  • I've had some issues (that I've posted on my blog), but in general, once you get through some upfront issues (especially with web projects) it works pretty well. No crashes or lockups that I can recall since installing RTM.

    And I do have SxS with 2003 & 2005.

  • Paschal,

Did you have Beta2 on the same machine? If so, are you sure you did a completely clean install of it?

Some of the things you are mentioning like "Different things happened like the lost of all templates when you want to add a new page and no way to find what is the culprit" sound a lot like a previous beta install of bits is causing a problem. Can you go into more details as to what exactly is happening with the templates?

Also -- what is happening when the IDE crashes? What specifically are you working on that causes it? Is it reproducable (in other words -- you do something and it always crashes) or just random?

    Thanks,

    Scott

  • Gotta say, although I've seen a couple of small issues, it's been pretty damn good. If you use ASP.Net, the html source code preservation is worth its wait in gold.

Did you use the VS.Net beta removal tool prior to installation? Failure to do so might be causing your problems.

  • Have you actually used Dreamweaver in anger?
