I know it's December, people are thinking about Christmas and how to stuff their turkey, but I can't stop thinking about a year ago, on this day just after Christmas in Thailand, something which has forever changed the way I am thinking about life.

The BBC has released recently an incredible documentary about the tragic event which has destroyed so many lives. This was an incredible piece of journalism, humble and respectful chronology of the pre and post Tsunami time. No voyeurism. A testimony to be proud of even if I wish this has never happened. It make you understand how small we are against natural catastrophes.

I still can't understand how lucky I am to be alive to write this a year after.

My thoughts are for the 300 000 people who lost their lives on the 26th December 2004.

  • Hi there,

I was curious if you were in the Indian Ocean region last year as you write 'how lucky I am to be alive to write this a year after' and 'forever changed the way I am thinking about life.'

I'd love to hear more as I am also collecting and sharing on the blog how the event has shaped others in their own words. Either I can link to your story, poem, essay, whatever OR you can send and I'll post.

I have not seen the BBC special as I live in US, but if you have the name of it I can try to track it down.

Thanks, you can spread the word on project using easier-to-remember URL www.tsunamianniversary.com as well. I'll be on the road through Feb 20th.

  • Hi Evelyn

Thanks for the comment, yes I was indeed in Phuket in Kata. My family and I were safe thanks that we were sleeping late this morning! But my wife and I helped as much as we can through the days after in hospitals or on the beaches.
