SQL 2005 Management Studio need to be improved :-(

OK this is one of my first rant of the year, and of course this is my opinion and I agree if you disagree.

SQL 2005 is a great Database software, no doubts. But I am concern by Management Studio. I believe the objectives by Microsoft was to provide a central place for all the SQL tools. The main problem is that this tool is “bloated“ to an extent it’s almost useless. Have you ever try to use it remotely when your data server is hosted externally, using for example Terminal to access the server.

In some cases, I can’t just do an update or a delete just because a table is not opened in the right conditions. Or I got too much timeout connections errors.

It’s really embarrassing from Microsoft, and I really regret the not that so bad Enterprise Manager (not perfect but in a couple of clicks I was able to do some basic remote functions like a delete or a quick update).

Now SMS is down too slow, not user friendly (too many clicks).

So maybe a suggestion would be to request from Microsoft a “light“ version close to what was Enterprise Manager for SQL 2000. at least something we can use in a remote situation.

  • I seems to always be running into problems with users and setting security permissions. Never had a problem using Enterprise Manager...

But, then again, maybe it's just me?

  • Sadly, I don't think it helps that it's a .NET app either

  • SMS is way, way better than Enterprise Manager, which was a collosal piece of junk. Perhaps you're thinking of Query Manager?

If you're doing updates or deletes from the table view rather than using SQL, expect delays. SMS (and EM) does a ton of stuff behind the scenes to ensure data integrity.

  • I'm with you.

    It's awful peace of software.

Once a while it clears my password text box and I need to type it again.

Too many clicks for very simple operations.

Too deep hierarcy (why I need to separate between Table-Value function and Scalar function?)

DataBase combo which select only first key

    and so and so...

  • I've had to use it for a couple of weeks now and I don't think it's that bad. At first I had my doubts, as it is sometimes dogslow and clumbsy in the menus, but after a while you get used to some of the quircks and will appreciate the things which are good. Of course there are things left to be desired. One thing for example is a lightweight query tool like QA, if only because it is really fast.

  • I find it more functional than the old Enterprise Manager, but it's made me have to put more RAM in my machine :-(. It is horribly slow.

  • Yesit is very very slow and remotely you get a lot of timeout errors becuase it's probably too slow to respons fast to the network request.

  • Folks,

You REALLY need to read my new e-Book, "An Introduction to SQL Server 2005 Management Studio." It's only $8 through www.sqlservercentral.com. I think part of the problem is not having all the options laid out for you. I spent 8 months researching this book and I can tell you that it will open your eyes to the power of SSMS.

Drop me a line if you have any questions, dalecorey1@yahoo.com.

    Sincerely,

    Dale Elizabeth Corey
