Broadband in West Cork

Sorry I don't post too much recently, I am still on holidays in West Cork. Usually it means a poor access to the web using an antic dial up connection so the use of In ternet is really limited to some emergency emails.

Now this week I convinced my family to have a broadband access and two phone calls and two days it's done and dusted. The installation was flawless and the speed is really good. For thos who know West Cork, most of the properties are scattered along the county with a lot of distance to any exchange server. One company here in Schull can provide a wireless connection as long as you are in a range of no more than 12 kilometers to Mount Gabriel (one of the highest mountain in the area) where a huge installation has been setup.
West Cork has finally entered the 21st century!

Now I just need to convince my boss I want to work remotely from here!

  • I heard of the wireless company operating from Mount Gabriel, but I was under the impression that it had a satellite backhaul? Its certainly a step forward, but I wouldn't celebrate just yet.

  • I have the wireless broadband and the back haul is NOT satellite, It connect to the fiber ring in Cork City.
